Max Meldrum, 1875–1955 (Scottish-Australian painter)

* Max Meldrum is known as the founder of Australian Tonalism, a representational style of painting that emerged in Melbourne during the 1910s, as well as for his portrait work, having won the Archibald Prize in 1939 and 1940.

Meldrum's unique theory of painting (Uranus on MC) was based on "the importance of tonal values and objective optical analysis, resulting in simple representational works characterised by a 'misty' or atmospheric quality" (nebulous Neptune is exactly opposite his Ascendant).

This pioneering artist also had the zero degree of Scorpio on his Ascendant and six planets (including Pluto opposite and ruling Jupiter-Mercury in Scorpio) all in a Fixed Grand Cross. Meldrum's "published theories of art created a storm in the Australian art world, and his school of painting attracted equally passionate followers and critics."

Joseph Mohr (Austrian Roman Catholic priest and writer)

* Joseph Mohr wrote the words to the Christmas carol "Silent Night" [German: "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht"]. He had Mercury unaspected in Capricorn in the 10th House. The song was first performed by a choir with Mohr on guitar because the local church organ wasn't working. An 1820 manuscript of the song surfaced publicly in 1995, having been held in a private collection for 175 years. Written by Mohr, it states that he wrote the words in 1816. They were put to music in 1818. The U.S. copyright office has registered 733 versions of the song, recognized as the best known and most popular of carols. Unaspected planets can work in weird and wonderful ways.

Joseph Pilates (German-American bodybuilder, inventor of the "Pilates" method)

* Joseph Pilates (1883–1967) invented and promoted the Pilates method of physical fitness. His birth certificate has been published online revealing 12:30 a.m. as his time of birth. (The writing says "halb ein uhr" (half to one) rather than "halb vier uhr" (half to four) if we compare with the hand-writing of "neunten" in the same document). Pilates had health-conscious Uranus rising in Virgo and a control-freak triple conjunction of Pluto-Chiron-Saturn, with Pluto in the last degree of Taurus, the sign of the physical body. The Pilates method was first called "Contrology" by Mr. Pilates, based on the idea of muscle control. His Moon is in muscular Aries sextile his Saturn and Part of Fortune.

Darrell Glenn, 1935-1990 (American singer-songwriter)

* Darrell Glenn made his mark in the music business with his 1953 recording of "Crying In the Chapel", written by his dad, Artie Glenn. His early recordings included "I Think I'm Falling In Love With You". "Crying in the Chapel" was covered by June Valli, Sonny Til & the Orioles and Elvis Presley; all versions becoming major hits. In 1959, Glenn re-recorded "Crying in the Chapel" for National Recording Corporation as the title track of an album of inspirational songs. The album has been re-released on CD by NRC. Glenn penned the Elvis release "Indescribably Blue".

"Crying In the Chapel"?? The Sun is in religious Sagittarius exactly conjunct the Ascendant, squared by teary Neptune high in the sky.

Michael Brown (American producer and writer of songs and books)

* Michael Brown is most widely known for several children's storybooks he has written about Santa Mouse. Santa Mouse was originally printed in 1966 but since then it has been reprinted many times. Tom Archia, 1919–1977 (American jazz tenor saxophonist)

* Tom Archia took "Texas Tom" as his marquee name. He played with Mit Larkin's band in Chicago, taking up a residency at the Rhumboogie Club from August 1942 to May 1943. From 1943 to 1944 he was a member of the Roy Eldridge orchestra and the Rhumboogie "Dream Band." In 1945, Archia went to Los Angeles to join Howard McGhee's combo. Returning to Chicago in 1946, he became a headliner at Leonard Chess's club, the Macomba Lounge, until 1950, and recorded extensively for Aristocrat Records, the predecessor to Chess Records, during 1947 and 1948. He retired to Houston in 1967, playing Houston clubs for the rest of his life.
With the Sun in Sagittarius and an equally-fiery triple Leo conjunction of the Ascendant, Neptune and Jupiter, Archia would have had plenty of energy to burn.

Charlie Applewhite, 1932-2001 (American singer)

* Charlie Applewhite was a baritone known as "the little man with the big voice." He had some minor hits for Decca in the mid-1950s, including "Put Your Heart Next to Mine" and "No One But You." He had a 1957 album release, Love Affair (and a lovely conjunction of the Moon and Venus in the 1st House). Applewhite appeared regularly on TV's Milton Berle and Ed Sullivan shows.

The exact square from Mercury to its ruler Jupiter explains the "little man with the big voice" tag.

John Hillerman (American actor)

* John Hillerman is probably best remembered for his role as former British Army Sergeant Major Jonathan Quayle Higgins III ("Higgins") on the American TV series Magnum, P.I. (1980–1988). The Texas-born Hillerman learned to do the upper-class English accent of Higgins by watching and listening to the performances of Laurence Olivier (Hillerman and Olivier both have Gemini rising and their Moons in Virgo). Hillerman co-starred with Tom Selleck in Magnum, P.I.. Selleck's Uranus is smack-bang on Hillerman's Ascendant.

Margaret Tudor, 1489–1541 (Queen consort of Scotland)

* Margaret Tudor's birth was recorded in the Beaufort Book of Hours, a royal family chronicle inherited by Henry VIII’s grandmother, Lady Margaret Beaufort (after whom Margaret was named). According to the Book, Margaret Tudor was born "at Westminster at night after the ninth hour a quarter."

Margaret's Ascendant was in Leo, the sign of royalty, and she had Neptune-Mars and her North Node in a Leo decan in the 5th, the royal house.

Upon her marriage to James IV, she became Queen of Scotland.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Margaret Tudor (28 November 1489 – 18 October 1541), born at Westminster Palace, was the elder of the two surviving daughters of Henry VII of England and Elizabeth of York, and the elder sister of Henry VIII. In 1503, she married James IV, King of Scots. James died in 1513, and their son became King James V. She married secondly Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus. Through her first and second marriages, respectively, Margaret was the grandmother of both Mary, Queen of Scots, and Mary's second husband, Lord Darnley. Margaret's marriage to James IV foreshadowed the Union of the Crowns - their great-grandson, King James VI of Scotland, the child of Mary and Darnley, became King of England and Ireland on the death of Margaret's fraternal niece, Elizabeth I of England.

Cixi, 1835-1908 (Chinese Empress Dowager)

* Empress Dowager Cixi was a powerful and charismatic woman who unofficially but effectively controlled the Manchu Qing Dynasty in China for 47 years, from 1861 to her death in 1908. Known as the 'Dragon Lady,' she had Saturn rising in Scorpio (as did 'Iron Lady' Margaret Thatcher). If we take at face value the time of birth of "four o'clock in the morning" given in a biography, then CiXi had 29° Libra rising. And indeed, she was adept at consolidating her political power through the manipulation of her close relations.

An imperial concubine in her adolescence, Cixi gave birth to the emperor's son, known as the Tongzhi Emperor, in 1856. On the emperor's death in 1875, she ousted a group of regents appointed by him and assumed regency over the Tongzhi Emperor. Cixi then consolidated control over the dynasty when, at the death of her Emperor son, contrary to the rules of succession, she installed her nephew as the Guangxu Emperor in 1875. She died a day after Guangxu.

BIRTH DATA: CiXi, 29 November 1835, 04:00 (4 a.m.) LMT (-7:45:40), Beijing, China (39n55, 116e25). ASC: 29 Libra. RR: B (from biography). SOURCE: Sy Scholfield (©) quotes Harry Hussey, Venerable Ancestor: The Life and Times of Tz'u Hsi, 1835-1908 (New York: Doubleday, 1949), p. 1: "The place was one of the old sections of the Tatar city of Peking, out near the Hsi Chih Men, the gate in the northwest corner of the city, where the poorer Mongols and Manchus lived. The time was the Double Tenth, the tenth day of the Tenth Moon of the fifteenth year of the reign of Tao Kuang, November 28, 1835, as the Western peoples reckon time. It was the Hour of the Tiger (four o'clock in the morning) ― the hour in in which so many people are born and so many die in China. . . . A child was being born to the Manchu woman and Grandfather Wong was much worried." NB: Hussey seems to have calculated the wrong day, as current references give 29 November.
