Anna Massey, 1937–2011 (English actress)

* In her obituary in The Guardian, Anna Massey is headlined as an "Award-winning actor with a fastidious intelligence and a hint of inner steel." The obit adds that "her Bafta-winning performance as the lonely writer of romantic fiction on holiday in Switzerland in Hotel du Lac (1986), . . . was the sort of role in which Massey was supreme: placid on the surface, with passion deep within her." These descriptions befit her Scorpio Ascendant. Indeed, she even played "The Iron Lady" Margaret Thatcher in Pinochet in Suburbia (2006). Massey and Thatcher both have Scorpio rising.

In Peeping Tom (1960), Massey appeared as "the naive downstairs neighbour of a psychotic landlord" conveying "a cold and repressed character on screen." Her other Scorpionic roles include a vampire who serves her murderer his blood disguised as tomato juice in Vault of Horror (1973) and a creepy Mrs Danvers in Rebecca (1979).

Massey had the Sun in Leo high in the sky and she came from a noted acting family: she was the daughter of British actress Adrianne Allen and Canadian-born Hollywood actor Raymond Massey. Her godfather was film director John Ford.

NATAL DATA and ASTROLOGY CHART

BIRTH DATA: Anna Raymond Massey, 11 August 1937, 15:00 (3pm) BST (-1), Coolham, near Billingshurst, England (51n01, 0w28). ASC: 25 Scorpio. RR: A (from memory). SOURCE: Sy Scholfield cites a telegram from her father Raymond Massey to Samuel Goldwyn quoted in "Proud Father Extols Arrival," Los Angeles Times, 16 August 1937, p. 10: "Anna Massey born Coolham, Eng., 6 o'clock this morning. At 6:20 I heard her voice on trans-Atlantic telephone..." Note: The report mentions that Raymond Massey was in hospital in Hollywood with phlebitis at the time; BST (-1) is 9 hours ahead of PST (+8) so Anna was born at 3 p.m. BST in England equal to 6 a.m. PST in California.

Alex Norton (Scottish television and film actor)

* Glaswegian actor Alex Norton played Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Matt Burke in the popular Scottish Television detective drama series Taggart from 2002 to 2010.

Burke has been described as "a man who could probably scare away a rottweiler just by looking at it."

No doubt Norton tapped into Pluto in his first house to perfect that look!

Darrell Glenn, 1935-1990 (American singer-songwriter)

* Darrell Glenn made his mark in the music business with his 1953 recording of "Crying In the Chapel", written by his dad, Artie Glenn. His early recordings included "I Think I'm Falling In Love With You". "Crying in the Chapel" was covered by June Valli, Sonny Til & the Orioles and Elvis Presley; all versions becoming major hits. In 1959, Glenn re-recorded "Crying in the Chapel" for National Recording Corporation as the title track of an album of inspirational songs. The album has been re-released on CD by NRC. Glenn penned the Elvis release "Indescribably Blue".

"Crying In the Chapel"?? The Sun is in religious Sagittarius exactly conjunct the Ascendant, squared by teary Neptune high in the sky.

Albert Collins, 1932–1993 (American electric blues guitarist and singer)

* Albert Collins had a distinctive guitar style. He was noted for his powerful playing and his use of altered tunings and capo.

His long association with the Fender Telecaster led to the title "The Master of the Telecaster."

James Clay, 1935-1994 (American hard bop jazz tenor saxophonist and flutist)

* While in school James Clay played alto saxophone, became a professional musician, and played with local bands in Dallas, Texas, including with Booker Ervin. Later, he went to California, there he played in 1957 in Red Mitchell's quartet and on recordings with Lawrence Marable. at the end of 1957 he returned to his hometown of Dallas, and served in the Army in 1959. "Franklin Park" is on the Digital Praise PC game Guitar Praise.

Wally Armendarez, 1933-1996 (American orquesta musician)

* Wally Armendarez first recorded some songs for Ideal Records when he was fifteen. He played with Beto Villa's orchestra, the Paulino Bernal Orquesta and backed up some of the major artists recording for Ideal. Armendarez's 1959 recording of the polka, "Las Cuatro Milpas" proved a good seller. In 1960, he formed his own group.

The Moon in Gemini tucked into the 12th House can make for a versatile back-up musician.

Charlie Applewhite, 1932-2001 (American singer)

* Charlie Applewhite was a baritone known as "the little man with the big voice." He had some minor hits for Decca in the mid-1950s, including "Put Your Heart Next to Mine" and "No One But You." He had a 1957 album release, Love Affair (and a lovely conjunction of the Moon and Venus in the 1st House). Applewhite appeared regularly on TV's Milton Berle and Ed Sullivan shows.

The exact square from Mercury to its ruler Jupiter explains the "little man with the big voice" tag.

Jewel Akens, 1933–2013 (American singer and record producer)

* Jewel Akens recorded the single, "The Birds And The Bees," in 1965, and the song went to Number 3 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart that year, and Number 2 on the Cash Box chart. It reached Number 29 in the UK Singles Chart, selling over one million copies worldwide, and was awarded a gold disc.

The lyric is based on the "birds and the bees" idiom commonly referenced with regard to affording young people their introductory sex education. Akens had an Aries Ascendant ruled by a very sexual Mars in Scorpio on his 8th house cusp, softened by a euphemistic sextile from Neptune.

John Hillerman (American actor)

* John Hillerman is probably best remembered for his role as former British Army Sergeant Major Jonathan Quayle Higgins III ("Higgins") on the American TV series Magnum, P.I. (1980–1988). The Texas-born Hillerman learned to do the upper-class English accent of Higgins by watching and listening to the performances of Laurence Olivier (Hillerman and Olivier both have Gemini rising and their Moons in Virgo). Hillerman co-starred with Tom Selleck in Magnum, P.I.. Selleck's Uranus is smack-bang on Hillerman's Ascendant.

Bobbie Nelson (American pianist and singer)

* Bobbie Nelson is the sister of Willie Nelson. At age sixteen she married Bud Fletcher, who formed his own band, The Texans. She joined on the piano, while her brother joined on vocals and guitar. The band was dissembled in 1955 after she divorced Fletcher. In 1973 she joined Willie Nelson on the piano during his sessions with Atlantic Records, that produced The Troublemaker, Shotgun Willie, Phases and Stages and Red Headed Stranger. The same year she joined Willie's band, The Family, full time and began touring with her brother. In 2008, she released her solo debut album, Audiobiography.. Bobbie's Taurus Moon is conjunct Willie's Chiron and her Capricorn Saturn is conjunct his Ascendant (see his chart here). Good solid synastry for this sister-brother duo!

Roger Sessions, 1896-1985 (American composer, critic, teacher of music)

* In her recently released biography of Roger Sessions, Andrea Olmstead quotes his birth certificate for a birth time of "7:00 a.m." Previously, I quoted a biography of Sessions by the same author for a birth time of "on the morning ... just in time to be welcomed by daylight."

Sessions had the Sun rising in Capricorn in the 1st house. He was one of the leading American composers of the 20th century, and he was twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

His first major compositions came while he was travelling Europe with his wife in his mid-twenties and early thirties. Returning to the United States in 1933, he taught first at Princeton University (from 1936), moved to the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught from 1945 to 1953, and then returned to Princeton until retiring in 1965. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1961. He was appointed Bloch Professor at Berkeley (1966–67), and gave the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures at Harvard University in 1968–69. He continued to teach on a part-time basis at the Juilliard School from 1966 until 1983.

His works written up to 1930 or so are more or less neoclassical in style. Those written between 1930 and 1940 are more or less tonal but harmonically complex. The works from 1946 on are atonal, and beginning with the Solo Violin Sonata of 1953, serial.

BIRTH DATA: born Roger Pitkin Sessions, baptised Roger Huntington Sessions, 28 December 1896, 07:00 (7 a.m.) EST (+5), Brooklyn, Kings, New York, USA (40n38, 73w56). ASC: 1 Capricorn. RR: AA (from quoted birth certificate).
SOURCE: Sy Scholfield (©) quotes Andrea Olmstead, Roger Sessions: A Biography (New York: Routledge, 2012), p. 29: "According to his birth certificate, filed January 6, 1897, Roger was born at 7:00 a.m. on December 28th at 417 Washington Ave. . . . The birth certificate listed Roger's name as 'Roger Pitkin Sessions.'"
Previously Scholfield quoted Andrea Olmstead, Roger Sessions and his Music (Ann Arbor, MI: UMI Research Press, 1985), p. 7, which states the date and place and quotes his mother's letter stating that he was born "on the morning ... just in time to be welcomed by daylight."

Evan Rachel Wood (American actress and singer)

* Evan Rachel Wood reportedly tweeted that she was born at 1:12 p.m., but I have her birth certificate on file clearly stating 1:24 p.m. as her time of birth.

Wood has been described by The Guardian as "one of the best actresses of her generation."

She has the dramatic Sun conjunct her MC and Jupiter in the last degree of Aries in the 5th, the house of acting. The Sun and Jupiter co-rule Uranus in the Leo decan of Sagittarius in the 1st house.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Evan Rachel Wood began her acting career in the late 1990s, appearing in several television series, including American Gothic (1995–1996) and Once and Again (1999–2002). She made her début as a leading film actress at the age of nine in Digging to China (1998) and became well known after her transition to a more adult-oriented Golden Globe-nominated role in the teen drama film Thirteen (2003).[2] Wood continued acting mostly in independent films, including Pretty Persuasion (2005), Down in the Valley (2006), Running with Scissors (2006), and in the big studio production Across the Universe (2007). Since 2008, Wood has appeared in more mainstream films, including The Wrestler (2008), Whatever Works (2009) and The Ides of March (2011). She has also returned to television, playing the supporting role of Queen Sophie-Anne on True Blood from 2009 to 2011 and playing Kate Winslet's daughter in the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce (2011), a role for which she was nominated for the Golden Globe and Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Johnny Mathis (American singer)

* Johnny Mathis's birth record has been cited for a time of 12 midnight, but I have Mathis's birth certificate on file, clearly stating "12 noon" (see image below). Mathis has sold over a third of a billion records during his outstanding career as a singer of love songs and other popular music. His many gold records are represented by the golden Sun in romantic Libra on the MC at the apex of a Yod with Saturn and Uranus. The Sun opposes Eris on his IC making a Boomerang pattern: he has yo-yoed on the subject of his sexuality. He came out as gay in a 1982 magazine article, but later retracted the statement, then, after more than 20 years of silence on the subject, he revealed in 2006 that his silence was because of death threats he received as a result of coming out in 1982. No doubt two features of his chart were involved in the death threats and his guarding of his privacy: Jupiter in Scorpio in his 12th ruling his Sagittarius Ascendant, plus Moon in Scorpio in mutual reception with Jupiter's ruler Pluto in the 8th house.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

John Royce "Johnny" Mathis (born September 30, 1935, Gilmer, Texas, United States) started his career with singles of standard music, becoming highly popular as an album artist, with several dozen of his albums achieving gold or platinum status, and 73 making the Billboard charts. Guinness World Record music chart historian Paul Gambaccini confirms "Johnny Mathis has sold well over 350 million records worldwide".

One of the last and most popular in a line of traditional male vocalists who emerged before the rock-dominated 1960s, Johnny Mathis concentrated on the romantic side of jazz and pop music standards for the adult contemporary audience of the 1960s and 1970s. Mathis later made it big in the market for music albums, where a dozen of his LPs hit gold or platinum. While he concentrated on theme-oriented albums of show tunes and traditional favorites during the 1960s, he began incorporating soft rock by the 1970s and remained a popular concert attraction well into the 1990s.

Prince George of Cambridge (British newsmaker)

* The anonymous British royal baby, now named Prince George, has a stellium of planets in Cancer including the Sun in the final degree. His Capricorn Moon is conjunct the natal Saturn of his late grandmother, Diana, Princess of Wales. He was born while transiting Pluto was posthumously making its exact opposition to her natal Sun.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Prince George of Cambridge (George Alexander Louis; born 22 July 2013) is the first, and so far only, child of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, as well as the only grandchild of Charles, Prince of Wales, and his first wife Diana, Princess of Wales. He is third in line to succeed his great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, after his grandfather and father.

Renée Jolivet (French nursemaid, artist's model)

* Renée Jolivet - nursemaid to the family of Auguste Renoir - is seen here in his painting, Claude and Renée, holding Auguste's son Claude "Clo-Clo" Renoir.
Her Venus is closely conjunct the painter's Neptune and Ascendant: She epitomised his preference for full-bodied women (See their charts below).
Later in life, Jolivet ran a delicatessen shop in Montmartre. Nursing and retail occupations are typical for a person with a Virgo Ascendant.

Biography

Renée Jolivet was a maid and nurse in the household of the painter, Auguste Renoir. She was the daughter of a day labourer and his wife who delivered Auguste's son, Claude. Jolivet posed for Auguste in the period 1901-1904. Jolivet was considered by Auguste's son Jean Renoir to be the most memorable of the nursemaids and models after Gabrielle Renard. In 1904 Jolivet left the Renoir household. She was married twice and had a daughter. For a time Jolivet ran a small grocery shop in Montmartre. She died on 25 October 1973.

Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin, 1759–1832 (French miniature painter)

* Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin painted miniatures of many famous people of his time, including Marie-Antoinette, Napoleon I and his family, and Louis XVIII, king of France.
Augustin had the Sun on his MC in creative Leo and the Moon in artistic Taurus, all closely aspected by Pluto, ruler of his Scorpio Ascendant. Pluto is the most miniature of the planets used by most astrologers, being smaller than Earth's Moon. His baptismal record has "Augustin Peintre" written in the margin (see image below).

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin (August 15, 1759 – April 13, 1832) first had some lessons from Jean-Baptiste Claudot and Jean Girardet in Nancy. After a few months in Dijon in 1780 he arrived in Paris in 1781 where he soon earned fame. During the French Revolution days he travelled to Brittany, Switzerland and Germany. Back in Paris in 1800 he married one of his pupils, Pauline Ducruet. She was 22 years younger than him and herself a painter in a similar style. In 1806 Jacques Augustin was appointed official painter to the court. Later on (1814) he became painter to the king. He died of cholera in Paris in 1832 and was buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery.

HOROSCOPE NOTES

Note also the very arty Neptune in Leo on the MC at the apex of a Yod. Eris is another miniature planet increasingly used by astrologers. It is conjunct Pluto and also aspecting the luminaries and MC.
