Bess Lomax Hawes, 1921–2009 (American folk musician, folklorist, researcher)

* In the early 1940s she moved to New York City, where she was active on the folk scene. She was an on-and-off member of the Almanac Singers. The legendary Woody Guthrie taught her mandolin.
In the 1950s she moved to California, where she taught guitar, banjo, mandolin and folk singing. In 1968 she became Associate Professor of Anthropology at San Fernando Valley State College. At California State University Northridge Hawes compiled an extensive archive of folk songs.

In 1977, she was named first director of the Folk and Traditional Arts Program at the National Endowment for the Arts, and created the National Heritage Fellowships, which recognize traditional artists and performers.
She retired in 1992. Her memoir, Sing It Pretty, was published by Illinois University Press in 2008. She died on November 27, 2009.

Darrell Glenn, 1935-1990 (American singer-songwriter)

* Darrell Glenn made his mark in the music business with his 1953 recording of "Crying In the Chapel", written by his dad, Artie Glenn. His early recordings included "I Think I'm Falling In Love With You". "Crying in the Chapel" was covered by June Valli, Sonny Til & the Orioles and Elvis Presley; all versions becoming major hits. In 1959, Glenn re-recorded "Crying in the Chapel" for National Recording Corporation as the title track of an album of inspirational songs. The album has been re-released on CD by NRC. Glenn penned the Elvis release "Indescribably Blue".

"Crying In the Chapel"?? The Sun is in religious Sagittarius exactly conjunct the Ascendant, squared by teary Neptune high in the sky.

Tommy Blake, 1931-1985 (American rockabilly singer, songwriter)

* Tommy Blake had Pluto in the 8th at the apex of a Cardinal T-Square involving an opposition between Uranus and the Moon/Mars. He was jailed for rape at an early age, then signed with the Marines for a tour. While enlisted he lost an eye, in mysterious circumstances. Eventually he recorded several songs including "Sweetie Pie," "Cool Alligator" and "I'll Be Free." He also co-wrote "Cool Gator Shoes" with Carl Belew in 1959 plus writing or co-inking "The Story Of A Broken Heart", picked up by Johnny Cash on Sun in 1958, "Lonely Street" and "Am I That Easy To Forget". During his last two decades Blake signed away the rights to songs he was writing, while succumbing to alcoholism, drug abuse, and heart disease. He died on Christmas Eve, 1985, when his third wife shot him to death under the Christmas tree in his Carthage, Texas home.

Clarence Swensen , 1917-2009 (American actor)

* Clarence Swensen was one of the last surviving Munchkins from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Swensen was not allowed to attend a public school until he was nine, because of his size. At 4ft 6ins, he played one of the 25 Munchkin soldiers in the 1939 film. He also appeared in The Terror of Tiny Town as a preacher. Many of his "Oz" co-stars were cast members of this Western musical film.

After suffering a stroke in 2005, he was unable to walk and ended up in a wheelchair as a result. He suffered from poor health then after but still attended many events with the other surviving Munchkins, including the presentation of the Munchkins' star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007. Swensen died on February 25, 2009.

He had a Pluto Boomerang.

Johnny Mathis (American singer)

* Johnny Mathis's birth record has been cited for a time of 12 midnight, but I have Mathis's birth certificate on file, clearly stating "12 noon" (see image below). Mathis has sold over a third of a billion records during his outstanding career as a singer of love songs and other popular music. His many gold records are represented by the golden Sun in romantic Libra on the MC at the apex of a Yod with Saturn and Uranus. The Sun opposes Eris on his IC making a Boomerang pattern: he has yo-yoed on the subject of his sexuality. He came out as gay in a 1982 magazine article, but later retracted the statement, then, after more than 20 years of silence on the subject, he revealed in 2006 that his silence was because of death threats he received as a result of coming out in 1982. No doubt two features of his chart were involved in the death threats and his guarding of his privacy: Jupiter in Scorpio in his 12th ruling his Sagittarius Ascendant, plus Moon in Scorpio in mutual reception with Jupiter's ruler Pluto in the 8th house.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

John Royce "Johnny" Mathis (born September 30, 1935, Gilmer, Texas, United States) started his career with singles of standard music, becoming highly popular as an album artist, with several dozen of his albums achieving gold or platinum status, and 73 making the Billboard charts. Guinness World Record music chart historian Paul Gambaccini confirms "Johnny Mathis has sold well over 350 million records worldwide".

One of the last and most popular in a line of traditional male vocalists who emerged before the rock-dominated 1960s, Johnny Mathis concentrated on the romantic side of jazz and pop music standards for the adult contemporary audience of the 1960s and 1970s. Mathis later made it big in the market for music albums, where a dozen of his LPs hit gold or platinum. While he concentrated on theme-oriented albums of show tunes and traditional favorites during the 1960s, he began incorporating soft rock by the 1970s and remained a popular concert attraction well into the 1990s.

Duchenne de Boulogne, 1806-1875 (French neurologist, smile technician)

* Using electricity, neurologist Duchenne de Boulogne determined that "smiles resulting from true happiness not only utilize the muscles of the mouth but also those of the eyes" and such 'genuine' smiles are known today as 'Duchenne smiles' in honour of his discovery. Duchenne had electric Uranus rising in smiley Libra ruled by Venus in happy Leo.

Guillaume-Benjamin-Amand Duchenne (de Boulogne) (September 17, 1806 in Boulogne-sur-Mer – September 15, 1875 in Paris) was a French neurologist who revived Galvani's research and greatly advanced the science of electrophysiology. The era of modern neurology progressed from Duchenne's understanding of the conductivity of neural pathways, his revelations of the effect of lesions on these structures and his diagnostic innovations including deep tissue biopsy, nerve conduction tests (NCS), and clinical photography.

Neurology did not exist in France before Duchenne and although many medical historians regard Jean-Martin Charcot as the father of the discipline, Charcot owed much to Duchennne, often acknowledging him as, "mon maitre en neurologie" (my master in neurology). The American neurologist Dr. Joseph Collins (1866-1950) wrote that Duchenne found neurology, "a sprawling infant of unknown parentage which he succored to a lusty youth." His greatest contributions were made in the myopathies that came to immortalize his name, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Duchenne-Aran spinal muscular atrophy, Duchenne-Erb paralysis, Duchenne's disease (Tabes dorsalis), and Duchenne's paralysis (Progressive bulbar palsy). He was the first clinician to practise muscle biopsy, the harvesting of in vivo tissue samples with an invention he called, "l'emporte-pièce" (Duchenne's trocar). In 1855 he formalized the diagnostic principles of electrophysiology and introduced electrotherapy in a textbook titled, De l'electrisation localisée et de son application à la physiologie, à la pathologie et à la thérapeutique. A companion atlas to this work titled, Album de photographies pathologiques, was the first neurology text illustrated by photographs. Duchenne's monograph, Mécanisme de la physionomie humaine – also illustrated prominently by his photographs – was the first study on the physiology of emotion and was seminal to Darwin's later work.

HOROSCOPE NOTES

Duchenne had Uranus (planet of electricity) rising in smiley Libra, ruled by Venus in happy Leo: He "formalized the diagnostic principles of electrophysiology and introduced electrotherapy in a textbook" and "By electricity he also determined that smiles resulting from true happiness not only utilize the muscles of the mouth but also those of the eyes. Such 'genuine' smiles are known as Duchenne smiles in his honor."
