Witi Ihimaera (New Zealand author)

* Witi Ihimaera was the first published Māori novelist. Ihimaera is of Māori descent (Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki) and Anglo-Saxon descent through his father. His stories generally portray Māori culture in modern New Zealand. His work often focuses on problems within contemporary Māori society.

In 1995, Ihimaera published Nights in the Gardens of Spain, a semi-autobiographical work about a married father of two daughters coming out. He had come out to himself as gay in 1984 and began the work, but out of sensitivity to his daughters, did not finish or publish it then. Nights In The Gardens Of Spain was filmed in 2010 with changes to the book, making the central character Māori rather than Pākehā (European) to more closely reflect Ihimaera's life. His story The Whale Rider was also made into a film.

Alain Leroy Locke, 1885-1954 (American writer, philosopher, educator, patron of the arts)

* Distinguished as the first African American Rhodes Scholar in 1907, Alain Leroy Locke was the philosophical architect —the acknowledged "Dean"— of the Harlem Renaissance. As a result, popular listings of influential African-Americans have repeatedly included him. On 19 March 1968, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. proclaimed: "We're going to let our children know that the only philosophers that lived were not Plato and Aristotle, but W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke came through the universe."

Locke was gay, and may have encouraged and supported other gay African-Americans who were part of the Harlem Renaissance. However, he was not fully public in his orientation and referred to it as his point of "vulnerable/invulnerability", taken to mean an area of risk and strength in his view.

After his retirement from Howard University in 1953, Locke moved to New York City. He suffered from heart disease, and after a six-week illness died at Mount Sinai Hospital on 9 June 1954.

Richard Hell (American singer, songwriter, bass guitarist, writer)

* Richard Hell, known as an innovator of punk music and fashion, was one of the first to spike his hair and wear torn, cut and drawn-on shirts, often held together with safety pins. Malcolm McLaren, manager of the Sex Pistols, has credited Hell as a source of inspiration for the Sex Pistols' look and attitude, as well as the safety-pin and graphics accessorized clothing that McLaren sold in his London shop, Sex.

Hell was in several important, early punk bands, including Neon Boys, Television, and The Heartbreakers, after which he formed Richard Hell & The Voidoids. Their 1977 album Blank Generation influenced many other punk bands. Its title song was named "One of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock" by music writers in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame listing and is ranked as one of the all-time Top 10 punk songs by a 2006 poll of original British punk figures, as reported in the Rough Guide to Punk.

Since the late 1980s, Hell has devoted himself primarily to writing, publishing two novels and several other books. He was the film critic for BlackBook magazine from 2004 to 2006.

Ernest Everett Just, 1883–1941 (African-American biologist, academic, science writer)

* Ernest Everett Just's primary legacy is his recognition of the fundamental role of the cell surface in the development of organisms. In his work within marine biology, cytology and parthenogenesis, he advocated the study of whole cells under normal conditions, rather than simply breaking them apart in a laboratory setting.

Just authored two books, Basic Methods for Experiments on Eggs of Marine Animals (1939) and The Biology of the Cell Surface (1939), and he also published at least seventy papers in the areas of cytology, fertilization and early embryonic development. He discovered what is known as the fast block to polyspermy; he further elucidated the slow block, which had been discovered by Fol in the 1870s; and he showed that the adhesive properties of the cells of the early embryo are surface phenomena exquisitely dependent on developmental stage.

In the fall of 1941, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and died shortly thereafter on 27 October 1941 in Washington D.C., aged 58.

William March, 1893–1954 (American fiction writer and US Marine)

* William March, a writer of psychological fiction, authored six novels and four short-story collections. March was praised by critics but never attained great popularity.

March grew up in rural Alabama in a family so poor that he could not finish high school, and he did not earn a high school equivalency until he was 20. He later studied law but was again unable to afford to finish his studies. In 1917, while working in a Manhattan law office, he volunteered for the US Marines and saw action in World War I, for which he was decorated with some of the highest honors—the French Croix de Guerre, the American Distinguished Service Cross, and the U.S. Navy Cross. After the war he again worked in a law office before embarking on a financially successful business career.

He also began writing, first short stories, then in 1933 a novel based on his war experiences, Company K. His follow-up work was the "Pearl County" series, novels and short fiction set in his native south Alabama, the most successful of which is the novel The Looking-Glass. However, literary success eluded him. His last novel, The Bad Seed, was published in 1954, the year March died (on 15 May). It became a bestseller, but he never saw his story adapted first for the stage in 1954, and then for film in 1956 and 1985.

Simmonds notes that various records including the family bible give 1894 but March insisted he was born in 1893.

Heiner Müller, 1929–1995 ([East] German dramatist, poet, writer, essayist and theatre director)

* Heiner Müller has been described as "the theatre's greatest living poet" since Samuel Beckett, and he is arguably the most important German dramatist of the 20th century after Bertolt Brecht. His "enigmatic, fragmentary pieces" are a significant contribution to postmodern drama and postdramatic theatre.

Müller died in Berlin of throat cancer on 30 December 1995, aged 66, acknowledged as one of the greatest German authors.

NATAL DATA and ASTROLOGY CHART

BIRTH DATA: Reimund Heiner Müller, 9 January 1929, circa 21:30 (9:30 PM) CET (-1), Eppendorf, Saxony, Germany (50n48, 13e14). ASC: 10-20 Virgo. RR: B (from auto/biography). SOURCE: Sy Scholfield quotes from his autobiography, "Werke: Eine Autobiographie" by Heiner Müller (Suhrkamp, 2005), p. 9: "Ich war eine schwere Geburt. Sie hat lange gedauert, von früh bis neun Uhr abends. 9. Januar 1929." Translation: I had a difficult birth. It took a long time, from morning till nine at night on 9 January 1929.

However, perhaps he was taking poetic licence (all those nines) because 10pm is given in several biographies including "Heiner Müller" by Jan-Christoph Hauschild (Rowohlt, 2000), p. 15: "Am 9. Januar 1929 abends gegen zehn Uhr wird ihr erstes Kind geboren, Reimund Heiner Müller." Translation: Their first child, Reimund Heiner Müller, was born on 9 January 1929 at ten o'clock in the evening.

Therefore 9:30pm is used.

Inge Müller, 1925–1966 (East German author)

* As a writer, Inge Müller, remained above all a poet. Although she created nearly 300 lyrical works, only a few have been published, mostly in the anthology In diesem besseren Land.

Müller also published children's books, Wölfchen Ungestüm (1955) and Zehn Jungen und ein Fischerdorf (1958); the radio drama Die Weiberbrigade; and the collaboration with Wiktor Rosows Auf dem Wege. With her third husband, Heiner Müller, she created the dramas Der Lohndrücker (1956), Die Umsiedlerin (1956), Die Korrektur (1957), Klettwitzer Bericht (1958) and Unterwegs (1963).

Inge Müller stood in the shadow of Heiner, who considered her more a coworker than an equal partner. She began an affair with his 16 year–old brother Wolfgang Müller in 1956 which failed and relations with her husband worsened noticeably. The awarding of the Heinrich Mann Prize to the both of them in 1959 did nothing to improve the situation. Plagued by depressions and psychosomatic troubles she attempted suicide several times. She was finally successful after an attempt on 1 June 1966. Only 41 years old, the writer died in her apartment on Kissingenplatz 12 of medication overdose and poisonous gas.

Paul van Ostaijen, 1896–1928 (Belgian poet and writer)

* Paul van Ostaijen earned the nickname 'Mister 1830,' derived from his habit of walking along the streets of Antwerp clothed as a dandy from that year. His poetry shows influences from Modernism, Expressionism, Dadaism and early Surrealism, but Van Ostaijen's style is very much his own.

An active flamingant (a supporter of Flemish independence), he had to flee to Berlin after WW2. In Berlin—-one of the centers of Dadaism and Expressionism—-he met many other artists. He also struggled through a severe mental crisis. Upon returning to Belgium, Van Ostaijen opened an art gallery in Brussels. He died of tuberculosis on 18 March 1928 in a sanatorium in Miavoye-Anthée, in the Wallonian Ardennes.

Buster Keaton, 1895–1966 (American actor, vaudevillian, comedian, filmmaker, stunt performer, writer)

* "Buster" Keaton was best known for his silent films, in which his trademark was physical comedy with a consistently stoic, deadpan expression, earning him the nickname "The Great Stone Face."

Critic Roger Ebert wrote of Keaton's "extraordinary period from 1920 to 1929, [when] he worked without interruption on a series of films that make him, arguably, the greatest actor-director in the history of the movies."

His career declined afterward with a dispiriting loss of his artistic independence when he was hired by MGM, which resulted in a crippling alcoholism that ruined his family life. However, he recovered in the 1940s, remarried and revived his career to a degree as an honored comic performer for the rest of his life, earning an Academy Honorary Award in 1958.

Keaton died of lung cancer on 1 February 1966, aged 70, in Woodland Hills, California.

Patrick Dennis, 1921–1976 (American author)

* Patrick Dennis's novel Auntie Mame: An Irreverent Escapade (1955) was one of the bestselling American books of the 20th century. In chronological vignettes, the narrator — also named Patrick — recalls his adventures growing up under the wing of his madcap aunt, Mame Dennis. Dennis wrote a sequel, Around the World with Auntie Mame, in 1958. Dennis based the character of Mame Dennis on his father's sister, Marion Tanner. He also wrote several novels under the pseudonym Virginia Rowans. All of Dennis's novels employ to some degree the traditional comic devices of masks, subterfuge and deception.

Auntie Mame was played by Rosalind Russell (in a 1956 Broadway production and in the highly successful 1958 screen adaptation), by Angela Lansbury (in Jerry Herman's 1966 musical Mame), and by Lucille Ball (in the 1974 film version).

The flamboyant and exuberant Mame's frequently repeated motto is "Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!" She is represented by Neptune at 11° Leo in Patrick Dennis's chart, as channelled through synastry by these starring ladies: Rosalind Russell had her MC at 14° Leo, Angela Lansbury had 21° Leo rising, and Lucille Ball had her Sun at 13° Leo.
