William March, 1893–1954 (American fiction writer and US Marine)

* William March, a writer of psychological fiction, authored six novels and four short-story collections. March was praised by critics but never attained great popularity.

March grew up in rural Alabama in a family so poor that he could not finish high school, and he did not earn a high school equivalency until he was 20. He later studied law but was again unable to afford to finish his studies. In 1917, while working in a Manhattan law office, he volunteered for the US Marines and saw action in World War I, for which he was decorated with some of the highest honors—the French Croix de Guerre, the American Distinguished Service Cross, and the U.S. Navy Cross. After the war he again worked in a law office before embarking on a financially successful business career.

He also began writing, first short stories, then in 1933 a novel based on his war experiences, Company K. His follow-up work was the "Pearl County" series, novels and short fiction set in his native south Alabama, the most successful of which is the novel The Looking-Glass. However, literary success eluded him. His last novel, The Bad Seed, was published in 1954, the year March died (on 15 May). It became a bestseller, but he never saw his story adapted first for the stage in 1954, and then for film in 1956 and 1985.

Simmonds notes that various records including the family bible give 1894 but March insisted he was born in 1893.

Inge Müller, 1925–1966 (East German author)

* As a writer, Inge Müller, remained above all a poet. Although she created nearly 300 lyrical works, only a few have been published, mostly in the anthology In diesem besseren Land.

Müller also published children's books, Wölfchen Ungestüm (1955) and Zehn Jungen und ein Fischerdorf (1958); the radio drama Die Weiberbrigade; and the collaboration with Wiktor Rosows Auf dem Wege. With her third husband, Heiner Müller, she created the dramas Der Lohndrücker (1956), Die Umsiedlerin (1956), Die Korrektur (1957), Klettwitzer Bericht (1958) and Unterwegs (1963).

Inge Müller stood in the shadow of Heiner, who considered her more a coworker than an equal partner. She began an affair with his 16 year–old brother Wolfgang Müller in 1956 which failed and relations with her husband worsened noticeably. The awarding of the Heinrich Mann Prize to the both of them in 1959 did nothing to improve the situation. Plagued by depressions and psychosomatic troubles she attempted suicide several times. She was finally successful after an attempt on 1 June 1966. Only 41 years old, the writer died in her apartment on Kissingenplatz 12 of medication overdose and poisonous gas.

George Takei (American "Star Trek" actor, social media star, human rights activist)

* With his Aquarian Ascendant ruled by a virtually unaspected Uranus, George Takei embodies the Uranian spirit of science fiction culture, internet media, humanitarian politics and a unique sense of humour. Moreover, Mars in Sagittarius on his MC rules his Sun in the last degree of Aries, making him an outspoken pioneer and successful leader in these fields.

Takei is most widely known for his role as Lieutenant Sulu, helmsman of the spaceship Enterprise in the sci-fi TV series Star Trek (1966-1969) and six Star Trek feature films (1979-1991). Today he is a regular on the science fiction convention circuit throughout the world.

Takei came out publicly as gay in October 2005. In 2006, he embarked on a nationwide "Equality Trek" speaking tour sharing his life as a gay Japanese American, his 18-year relationship with (his now-husband) Brad Altman, and experiences on Star Trek, encouraging others to share their own personal stories. In 2008, Takei and Altman became the first same-sex couple to apply for a marriage licence in West Hollywood, and they were married on 14 September 2008.

Takei joined Facebook in 2011 and today his daily posts of humorous pictures (many of which are related to sci-fi, gay culture and political satire) have attracted over 8 million followers, such that he has been lauded as "the funniest guy on Facebook."

On his website, Takei declares: "My name is George Takei. Some know me as Mr. Sulu but I hope all know me as a believer in, and a fighter for, the equality and dignity of all human beings." Astrologically, his words and actions reveal him as a herald of the Age of Aquarius.

Goldie Hill, 1933–2005 (American country music singer)

* Goldie Hill was one of the first women in country music, and became one of the first women to reach the top of the country music charts with her No. 1 1953 hit, "I Let the Stars Get In My Eyes". Along with Kitty Wells, she helped set the standard for later women in country music. Hill might have had a longer career in country music had she been inclined to pursue it. She had a strong and twangy voice that can be heard in other country singers of the 1960s such as Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. With the success of Kitty Wells and her 1952 hit "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels", Hill was able to pursue her own career after the profit potential of female singers was realized by record companies.

Michael C. Hall (American actor)

* Michael C. Hall is best known for his role as the serial-killer Dexter Morgan in the Showtime TV series Dexter. Hall has won a Golden Globe award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for this role. Previously, he played David Fisher, a young man struggling with his homosexuality while following in the footsteps of his deceased mortician-father, in the HBO drama series Six Feet Under.

Hall's Aquarian Sun and Ascendant are ruled by Uranus in the 8th: the house of death, murder, mortuaries, serial-killers and sexuality issues. Pluto also resides in this house in the last degree of analytical Virgo and in quincunx with the Ascendant. Moreover, Pluto and Neptune make a Yod with the Moon. Luna is at the apex of the Yod in bloody Aries on the cusp of the Jekyll-and-Hyde 3rd house: Dexter is a blood-spatter analyst by day, and a serial killer vigilante by night. Note also Mars on the MC ruling the Moon, and Mars and Neptune conjunct their ruler Jupiter (final dispositor of the chart) on the MC. Jupiter thus particularly exaggerates Mars and Neptune, hence all the blood and gore and all the deception about Dexter's true character (which gives the show its kick).

Hall's ex-wife, Jennifer Carpenter, plays Dexter's adoptive sister, Debra Morgan, in the TV series. Carpenter's Sun-Neptune conjuncts Hall's MC-Venus. Hall's 8th-house Uranus conjuncts Carpenter's Ascendant. And Carpenter, who plays a rookie-cum-senior-detective on Dexter, has Pluto rising in her chart (see her chart here).

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Hall stars in and co-produces the Showtime television series Dexter, in which he plays the eponymous character, a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who moonlights as a vigilante serial killer. The series premiered on October 1, 2006 and its eighth and final season has begun on June 30, 2013. For his work on Dexter, Hall was nominated for five more Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The show itself was also nominated for a 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 Emmy in the Drama Series category. He won the 2007 Television Critics Association Award for Individual Achievement in Drama. Hall was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Drama in 2007, and again in 2008, finally winning the award at the 67th Golden Globe Awards in 2010. Also in 2010, he won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. Season 6 premiered on October 2, 2011. Michael C. Hall was nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Drama series at the 2011 Emmy Awards, but did not win the category. Hall was negotiating his contract along with Showtime to raise his salary for the seventh season. On November 18, 2011, it was announced that Dexter had been renewed for a seventh season which concluded December 2012, and the show was renewed for an eighth season to air June 30, 2013. After months of rumors, on April 18, 2013, Showtime announced via social media that season eight would be the final season of Dexter.

Carrie Hamilton,1963–2002 (American actress, singer, playwright)

* Comedienne Carol Burnett reveals in a recent book that her daughter Carrie Hamilton was born at 11:20 in the morning. Hamilton - who died from lung and brain cancer, aged 38 - had an angular fixed t-square with Saturn right on the Ascendant opposite the Moon; both planets square Neptune in Scorpio high in the chart. Her Neptune is ruled by Pluto on the Vertex and is conjunct Uranus. Mother and daughter have Saturn closely conjunct, indicting that Hamilton was born near to Burnett's Saturn return.

Piero Manzoni, 1933–1963 (Italian artist)

* Piero Manzoni ― who thumbed his nose at the art-world establishment ― had Saturn rising in Aquarius opposite Venus in Leo. His most famous artwork, "produced" in 1961, consists of ninety 30g tin cans, filled with his faeces, and labelled Artist's Shit in Italian, English, French, and German. Manzoni had Neptune unaspected in anal Virgo on his Vertex.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Piero Manzoni (July 13, 1933 – February 6, 1963) was an Italian artist best known for his ironic approach to avant-garde art. Often compared to the work of Yves Klein, his own work anticipated, and directly influenced, the work of a generation of younger Italian artists brought together by the critic Germano Celant in the first Arte Povera exhibition held in Genoa, 1967. Manzoni is most famous for a series of artworks that call into question the nature of the art object, directly prefiguring Conceptual Art. His work eschews normal artist's materials, instead using everything from rabbit fur to human excrement in order to "tap mythological sources and to realize authentic and universal values".

His work is widely seen as a critique of the mass production and consumerism that was changing Italian society (the Italian economic miracle) after World War II. Italian artists such as Manzoni had to negotiate the new economic and material order of post-war Europe through inventive artistic practices which crossed geographic, artistic, and cultural borders.

Piero di Cosimo, 1462–1522 (Italian Renaissance painter)

* Piero di Cosimo had five planets and his Ascendant in Aquarius. No wonder, then, that he acquired a reputation for eccentricity during his lifetime.

Piero di Cosimo (2 January 1462 – 12 April 1522), also known as Piero di Lorenzo, was born in Florence and apprenticed under the artist Cosimo Rosseli, from whom he derived his popular name and whom he assisted in the painting of the Sistine Chapel in 1481.

In the first phase of his career, Piero was influenced by the Netherlandish naturalism of Hugo van der Goes, whose Portinari Triptych (now at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence) helped to lead the whole of Florentine painting into new channels. From him, most probably, Cosimo acquired the love of landscape and the intimate knowledge of the growth of flowers and of animal life.

He journeyed to Rome in 1482 with his master, Rosselli. He proved himself a true child of the Renaissance by depicting subjects of Classical mythology in such pictures as the Venus, Mars, and Cupid, The Death of Procris, the Perseus and Andromeda series, at the Uffizi, and many others. Inspired to the Vitruvius' account of the evolution of man, Piero's mythical compositions show the bizarre presence of hybrid forms of men and animals, or the man learning to use fire and tools.

During his lifetime, Cosimo acquired a reputation for eccentricity. Reportedly, he was frightened of thunderstorms, and so pyrophobic that he rarely cooked his food; he lived largely on hard-boiled eggs, which he prepared 50 at a time while boiling glue for his artworks. He also resisted any cleaning of his studio, or trimming of the fruit trees of his orchard; he lived, wrote Vasari, "more like a beast than a man".

Piero enjoyed a great reputation as a portrait painter: the most famous of his work is in fact the portrait of a Florentine noblewoman, Simonetta Vespucci, mistress of Giuliano de' Medici.

Read more from his Wikipedia biography.

HOROSCOPE NOTES

His Aquarian stellium was ruled by Uranus in Virgo, signalling his pyrophobia and weird dietary obsessions.

NATAL DATA and ASTROLOGY CHART

BIRTH DATA: Piero di Lorenzo di Piero, 2 January 1462 [OS], 09:00 (9 a.m.) LMT (-0:45), Florence, Italy (43n46, 11e15). ASC: 17 Aquarius. RR: AA (from quoted birth records). SOURCE: Sy Scholfield (c) quotes Dennis Geronimus's article, "The birth date, ealy life, and career of Piero di Cosimo" (The Art Bulletin, New York: March 2000. Vol. 82, Iss. 1; pg. 164, 7 pgs): "A new database of Florentine baptismal records, currently being compiled by Karl Schlebusch and Anne Schleicher, provided a list of all males born and baptized as Piero di Lorenzo in Florence between 1450 and 1470, allowing the discovery of a new document specifically recording that Piero di Lorenzo di Piero, of the parish of S. Lorenzo, was born at fifteen hours after sundown (approximately nine in the morning) on January 2, 1462, and baptized on the same day. ... The Italian hours are explained briefly in E. H. Ramsden, The Letters of Michelangelo, vol. 1 (London: Peter Owen, 1963). Sunset marked the beginning of the day, meaning that the first hour varied from day to day; the same hour, therefore, represented a different time in each of the seasons. In the case of Piero's birth, fifteen hours (after sunset) in January would be equivalent to roughly nine in the morning."

Newsmaker: Rolf Harris (Australian entertainer)

* Rolf Harris has been named by British media as the Australian arrested and questioned last month over historic sex abuse allegations. The ABC states that the reports are unverified. Solar Arc Pluto is opposing Harris's natal Mercury-Sun conjunction; Solar Arc Jupiter is exactly conjunct his natal Neptune; and Solar Arc Neptune is quincunx his natal Venus.

Rolf Harris, AO, CBE (born 30 March 1930) is an Australian entertainer. He is a musician, a singer-songwriter, a composer, a painter, and a television personality. He has lived in the UK for more than five decades, residing in Bray, Berkshire.

Harris, who was born and grew up in Perth, Western Australia, was a champion swimmer before studying art. In 1952, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he started to draw animations for television programmes. Harris soon afterwards began a musical career, initially singing and playing the piano accordion. In 1957, he wrote "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport", which later became a Top 10 hit in Australia, the UK and the United States. While performing in Canada he introduced a longstanding, popular routine around his song "Jake the Peg". Harris often uses unusual instruments in his performances: he plays the didgeridoo, is credited with the invention of a rhythmic percussion instrument, the wobble board, and is associated with the Stylophone, a small electronic keyboard instrument.

During the 1960s he became a popular television personality, later presenting shows including Rolf's Cartoon Club, Animal Hospital and various programmes about serious art. In 2005 he painted an official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was the subject of a special episode of Rolf on Art.

Stefan Lorant (Filmmaker, photojournalist, author)

* Stefan Lorant's mother wrote in her Jewish prayer book: 'Stefan our Son born 1901, February 22nd, 6.00 a.m. God's Blessing should accompany his dear life.'

Stefan (Istvan) Lorant (February 22, 1901 in Budapest, Hungary - November 14, 1997 in Rochester, Minnesota) was a pioneering Hungarian-American filmmaker, photojournalist, and author.

After completing high school in his native Hungary in 1919, Lorant moved to Germany, where he made his mark in films and photojournalism. His first film, The Life of Mozart, established him as a filmmaker, and he went on to make 14 films in Vienna and Berlin, some of which he wrote, directed, and photographed. He claimed to have given Marlene Dietrich her first film test, and though he rejected her for the part, they remained lifelong friends. Lorant's abilities in writing and still photography led to the editorship of the Münchner Illustrierte Presse, one of Germany's finest picture magazines.

Opposed to Adolf Hitler, Lorant was imprisoned right after Hitler came to power. Released after six months, he made his way to England, where he wrote I Was Hitler's Prisoner, a memoir that sold out many printings. He edited the Weekly Illustrated, a popular British picture magazine, then founded Lilliput, made famous by his clever picture juxtapositions, as in Neville Chamberlain versus the llama. On October 1, 1938, Lorant co-founded with publisher Sir Edward G. Hulton the first great British picture magazine, Picture Post. During this time, Lorant published a Picture Post Special about the United States.

Failing to obtain British citizenship, Lorant moved to Lenox, Massachusetts in July 1940, where he lived the remainder of his life. Tom Hopkinson succeeded Lorant as editor of Picture Post.
