Alain Leroy Locke, 1885-1954 (American writer, philosopher, educator, patron of the arts)

* Distinguished as the first African American Rhodes Scholar in 1907, Alain Leroy Locke was the philosophical architect —the acknowledged "Dean"— of the Harlem Renaissance. As a result, popular listings of influential African-Americans have repeatedly included him. On 19 March 1968, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. proclaimed: "We're going to let our children know that the only philosophers that lived were not Plato and Aristotle, but W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke came through the universe."

Locke was gay, and may have encouraged and supported other gay African-Americans who were part of the Harlem Renaissance. However, he was not fully public in his orientation and referred to it as his point of "vulnerable/invulnerability", taken to mean an area of risk and strength in his view.

After his retirement from Howard University in 1953, Locke moved to New York City. He suffered from heart disease, and after a six-week illness died at Mount Sinai Hospital on 9 June 1954.

Buster Keaton, 1895–1966 (American actor, vaudevillian, comedian, filmmaker, stunt performer, writer)

* "Buster" Keaton was best known for his silent films, in which his trademark was physical comedy with a consistently stoic, deadpan expression, earning him the nickname "The Great Stone Face."

Critic Roger Ebert wrote of Keaton's "extraordinary period from 1920 to 1929, [when] he worked without interruption on a series of films that make him, arguably, the greatest actor-director in the history of the movies."

His career declined afterward with a dispiriting loss of his artistic independence when he was hired by MGM, which resulted in a crippling alcoholism that ruined his family life. However, he recovered in the 1940s, remarried and revived his career to a degree as an honored comic performer for the rest of his life, earning an Academy Honorary Award in 1958.

Keaton died of lung cancer on 1 February 1966, aged 70, in Woodland Hills, California.

Olivier Sarkozy (French banker)

* Olivier Sarkozy is based in the United States where he works in investment banking overseeing multi billion dollar transactions. His half-brother is Nicolas Sarkozy, former President of France. In 2014, he married actress and fashion designer Mary-Kate Olsen.

Nick Wooster (American creative consultant, fashion designer, businessman)

* Nick Wooster is described on Wikipedia as "a street style icon." He has worked with Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus chain stores, as well as Calvin Klein, Polo Ralph Lauren and Thom Browne brands.

In 2012, Wooster designed a collection of shirts for the American brand Hamilton 1883. In 2014-2015, he created two joint collections with Japanese brand United Arrows. Also in 2014, Wooster designed a collection with the Italian house Lardini, presented at the men's fashion exhibition Pitti Uomo in Florence. In 2015, he designed a capsule collection of clothes from merino wool in cooperation with the Swedish brand The White Briefs, also presented at Pitti Uomo.

Wooster is known for wearing tailored blazers, a handlebar moustache and tattoo sleeves.

* Bevy Smith is a co-host on Bravo's fashion-themed talk show Fashion Queens.

She is also the creator of "Dinner with Bevy," a dinner party series in which she brings together people from across entertainment, fashion and media.

Beccy Cole (Australian country music singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist)

* Beccy Cole has released eight albums, with three reaching the ARIA Albums Chart top 40: Little Victories (20 January 2003), Preloved (3 September 2010) and Songs & Pictures (10 October 2011). Cole has received nine Golden Guitar trophies at the CMAA Country Music Awards of Australia.

In July 2012 Cole revealed that she is a lesbian on ABC-TV series, Australian Story. In October 2013 she was the inaugural ambassador for the Adelaide-based Feast Festival and in the following month she presented her show, The Queer of Country.

Cole reveals in her autobiography that she was born at 11:05 pm at Glenelg Hospital in Adelaide. She thus has the first degree of Cancer on her Ascendant ruled by the Moon in Cancer on her South Node in the first house.

Cate Blanchett (Australian actor)

* Cate Blanchett has stated that she has Taurus Sun, Taurus Moon and Taurus rising but it's not possible for her to have both the Moon and Ascendant in this sign on the date she was born. Her birth notice appeared in the local newspaper the day after her birth, which usually indicates a birth early in the day. The Moon did not move into Taurus until about 5:30pm the day she was born and it is unlikely that news of her birth was communicated to the newspaper that late in the day. A speculative time of 6:40 a.m. gives mid Taurus (15 degrees) on the Ascendant which seems the best approximation considering the info given.

SOURCE: Sy Scholfield quotes her birth notice and two statements from her to speculate an approximate time of birth. The birth notice gives the date and place: "BLANCHETT (Gamble)--To June and Bob--a daughter (Catherine Elise), at Jessie McPherson, on May 14th. Both well" (The Age [Melbourne], 15 May 1969, p. 17). Blanchett has stated, "I like the heroines. I'm a bull. I'm a Taurus. I think I've got something tragic like Taurus moon, Taurus sun, Taurus rising. I'm a complete bull" ("I won't do any nude scenes" by Clare Goldwin, Mirror, 26 Nov. 2003, p. 46.). She has also reportedly stated, "Apparently, I’m Taurus moon, Taurus sun and Taurus Rising. That’s pretty Taurus, eh? Which explains a lot, doesn’t it?" (20/2/2014: http://www.wisconsingazette.com/film/cate-blanchette-strives-to-balance-family-and-career.html). It is not possible for her to have Taurus rising and Taurus Moon. The birth announcement appeared the day after her birth which usually indicates a time of birth early in the day. The moon did not move into Taurus until about 5:30pm and it is unlikely that the news of her birth would have been phoned through to the newspaper that late in the day. A speculative time of 6:40 a.m. puts mid Taurus (15 degrees) on the Ascendant which seems the best approximation considering the info given. Scholfield emailed a family member on 7 April 2001 requesting her time of birth but did not receive a reply.

Augustus II the Strong, Elector of Saxony

* Augustus II the Strong is famous for his great physical strength which earned him the nicknames "the Strong," "the Saxon Hercules" and "Iron-Hand." He lived up to his name by breaking horseshoes with his bare hands. That's certainly an interesting expression of Mars opposite Pluto. Augustus was also a voracious womanizer, bedding a string of mistresses over several decades and fathering as many as 382 children. His philandering Jupiter-Moon conjunction in Cancer is propelled by an opposition from Mars in Capricorn which also rules Venus in Aries on his North Node.

Nawal El Saadawi (Egyptian feminist writer, activist, physician, psychiatrist)

* Nawal El Saadawi has written many books on the subject of women in Islam, paying particular attention to the practice of female genital mutilation in her society. She has a stellium of planets in genital Scorpio (including surgical Mars) all ruled by mutilator Pluto in feminist Cancer high in the sky.

Mick Fanning (Australian professional surfer)

* Mick Fanning has recently become a triple world surfing champion, having won the 2007, 2009 and 2013 ASP World Tours.

His Taurus Ascendant is ruled by Venus (conjunct Mercury) in watery Cancer, indicating a love of the ocean. Venus is in mutual reception with the Moon in Libra, surely keeping him balanced on his surfboard. Fanning is nicknamed "White Lightning" because his style is lightning fast: electrical Uranus in powerful Scorpio squares and rules his MC.

Grayson Perry (English artist)

* Grayson Perry, CBE, is known mainly for his ceramic vases and cross-dressing. Perry's vases have classical forms and are decorated in bright colours, depicting subjects at odds with their attractive appearance. There is a strong autobiographical element in his work, in which images of Perry as "Claire", his female alter-ego, often appear. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 2003, the first time it was given to a ceramic artist. He attended the award ceremony dressed as Claire, wearing a little girl party frock. Perry has Taurus rising, ruled by Venus in Pisces in the offbeat 11th House. Double-identity Mercury is conjunct his Venus and both are ruled and trined by Neptune in Scorpio on the Descendant, explaining the sexually explicit content of much of his work.

Goldie Hill, 1933–2005 (American country music singer)

* Goldie Hill was one of the first women in country music, and became one of the first women to reach the top of the country music charts with her No. 1 1953 hit, "I Let the Stars Get In My Eyes". Along with Kitty Wells, she helped set the standard for later women in country music. Hill might have had a longer career in country music had she been inclined to pursue it. She had a strong and twangy voice that can be heard in other country singers of the 1960s such as Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. With the success of Kitty Wells and her 1952 hit "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels", Hill was able to pursue her own career after the profit potential of female singers was realized by record companies.

Ivan Davis (American classical pianist)

* Ivan Davis debuted at New York City's Town Hall in 1959. He made his international debut at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. In 1960, he signed with CBS Records and began a 60 concert cross-country tour. He has toured the world with several major orchestras including the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Spanish National Orchestra. He has performed under such world-famous conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy and Lorin Maazel. He is listed in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, and has received the Handel Medallion from New York City for contributions to the city's cultural life. He recorded for London Records in the 1970s.

Bill Boyd, 1910–1977 (American Western style singer and guitarist)

* In 1932, Bill Boyd formed the pioneering western swing band "The Cowboy Ramblers" with himself on guitar. The Cowboys Ramblers made more than 225 recordings between 1934-1951. The band had their own popular radio show, "The Bill Boyd Ranch House." In 1935, the Cowboy Ramblers had a huge hit with their recording of "Under the Double Eagle" which later became a western swing standard and remained in print for twenty five years. Other classics of the 1930s include "I've Got Those Oklahoma Blues", "Fan It", "Wah Hoo", "Beaumont Rag" and "New Steel Guitar Rag". The Cowboy Ramblers became major stars on radio and were offered work in Hollywood films and Boyd eventually appeared in six Western films during the 1940s. For his contribution to radio, Bill 'Cowboy Rambler' Boyd has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6101 Hollywood Blvd.

Harry Babasin, 1921-1988 (American jazz bassist, nicknamed "The Bear")

* In 1947, Harry Babasin recorded the first cello solos known in jazz music, with the Dodo Marmarosa Trio. In order to do so, he tuned his strings in fourths. In later cello ensembles he added a bass player. He and Oscar Pettiford did a session together with two cellos. In the mid-1950s, he put together his own ensemble, Harry Babasin & the Jazzpickers, who played regularly at the Purple Onion in Hollywood; this ensemble released three albums. His career cooled in the 1960s; he supported Bob Hope on USO tours. In the 1970s he and Roy Harte initiated the Los Angeles Theaseum, a jazz archive and preservation society.

Babasin had Mars unaspected in its own sign Aries. Surely the mark of a true pioneer.

Charlie Applewhite, 1932-2001 (American singer)

* Charlie Applewhite was a baritone known as "the little man with the big voice." He had some minor hits for Decca in the mid-1950s, including "Put Your Heart Next to Mine" and "No One But You." He had a 1957 album release, Love Affair (and a lovely conjunction of the Moon and Venus in the 1st House). Applewhite appeared regularly on TV's Milton Berle and Ed Sullivan shows.

Ann Wedgeworth (American actress)

* Ann Wedgeworth appeared regularly on Another World (1967–70), Somerset (1970–73), Three's Company (1979), and Evening Shade (1990–94). In 1978 she received the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play for Neil Simon's Chapter Two.

Wedgeworth has Neptune unaspected in her chart, along with a Grand Cross.

Virginia Vale, 1920-2006 (American film actress)

* Virginia Vale starred in a number of B-movie Westerns but took a variety of other roles as well, notably in Blonde Comet (1941), in which she played a race car driver. After her film career, she became an executive secretary at Lockheed and also a competition judge for the US Figure Skating Association.

Vale had a triple conjunction of Ascendant, Neptune and Jupiter in dramatic and sporty Leo.
