* Georges Claude is noted as the inventor of neon lighting, and for his early work on the industrial liquefaction of air, and for a large experiment on generating energy by pumping cold seawater up from the depths. He has been considered by some to be "the Edison of France". Alain Leroy Locke, 1885-1954 (American writer, philosopher, educator, patron of the arts)

* Distinguished as the first African American Rhodes Scholar in 1907, Alain Leroy Locke was the philosophical architect —the acknowledged "Dean"— of the Harlem Renaissance. As a result, popular listings of influential African-Americans have repeatedly included him. On 19 March 1968, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. proclaimed: "We're going to let our children know that the only philosophers that lived were not Plato and Aristotle, but W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke came through the universe."

Locke was gay, and may have encouraged and supported other gay African-Americans who were part of the Harlem Renaissance. However, he was not fully public in his orientation and referred to it as his point of "vulnerable/invulnerability", taken to mean an area of risk and strength in his view.

After his retirement from Howard University in 1953, Locke moved to New York City. He suffered from heart disease, and after a six-week illness died at Mount Sinai Hospital on 9 June 1954.

Elliott Smith,1969–2003 (American singer-songwriter, musician)

* Elliott Smith's heartbreaking songs were rendered all the more haunting by his tragic death.

He had Venus and the Moon in mutual reception with Venus ruling his Ascendant in the last degree of Taurus and the Moon conjunct his Ascendant.

Venus is squared by Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter, not to mention the quincunx from Mars: He came to fame with his song "Miss Misery."

Perhaps Mars in conjunction with Neptune, both descending, along with the Sun in Leo on the IC, brought him down and contributed to his undoing.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and resided for a significant portion of his life in Portland, Oregon, the area in which he first gained popularity. Smith's primary instrument was the guitar, but he was also proficient with piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums and harmonica. Smith had a distinctive vocal style, characterized by his "whispery, spiderweb-thin delivery", and used multi-tracking to create vocal layers, textures and harmonies.

After playing in the rock band Heatmiser for several years, Smith began his solo career in 1994, with releases on the independent record labels Cavity Search and Kill Rock Stars (KRS). In 1997, he signed a contract with DreamWorks Records, the label for which he recorded two albums. Smith rose to mainstream prominence when his song "Miss Misery"—included in the soundtrack for the film Good Will Hunting—was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Original Song category in 1998.

Smith suffered from depression, alcoholism and drug dependence, and these topics often appear in his lyrics. At age 34, he died in Los Angeles, California from two stab wounds to the chest. The autopsy evidence was inconclusive as to whether the wounds were self-inflicted. At the time of his death, Smith was working on his sixth studio album, From a Basement on the Hill, which was posthumously completed and released.

Conrad Hilton Jr., 1926–1969 (American socialite, hotel heir)

* Handsome hotel heir, Conrad Hilton Jr., had maidenly Venus in Gemini smack-bang on his Ascendant and with no close aspects except for a sextile to its ruler, Mercury in glamour-puss Leo. He liked the ladies and he is remembered for his short marriage to one beautiful future star in particular. Not the beauty queen Zsa Zsa Gabor, with whom he had an affair in his teens while she was his step-mother. And not the second of his two 18-year-old brides, oil heiress Patricia McClintock, but the other young lady: the budding screen legend Elizabeth Taylor. When he died young, at the age of 42, Hilton was fated to be identified in headlines as "ONCE WED TO LIZ TAYLOR." A renowned playboy and gambler, Hilton had philandering punter Jupiter on his MC opposite majorly boozy Neptune in Leo on his IC (and its ruler the Sun conjunct do-or-die Pluto). His death from a heart attack was brought about by many years of hitting the bottle.

In 1958, Hilton married oil heiress Patricia "Trish" McClintock. They had two sons: Conrad Nicholson Hilton III and Michael Otis Hilton.

A. B. Guthrie, Jr., 1901–1991 (American writer)

* A. B. Guthrie, Jr ― who won the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for fiction for his novel The Way West (about the journey of American expansion in the old west) ― had the North Node in the first degree of Sagittarius ruled by Jupiter in the same sign, being its own sign.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

His novels include Murders at Moon Dance, which was published during 1943. The Big Sky appeared during 1947, with a young person's edition during 1950. Guthrie continued to write predominantly western subjects, including the Academy Award-nominated script for the movie Shane during 1953 and the novel These Thousand Hills during 1956. Lance Bass (New Astrology Data and Chart)

* The birth time of openly-gay American former pop star, Lance Bass, is 1:20pm according to an unofficial biography. He states his full birth name, James Lance Bass, in his autobiography Out of Sync.

Lance Bass is an American pop singer, dancer, actor, film and television producer, and author. He grew up in Mississippi and rose to fame as the bass singer for the American pop boy band 'N Sync. 'N Sync's success led Bass to work in film and television. He starred in the 2001 film On the Line, which his company, Bacon & Eggs, also produced. Bass later formed a second production company, Lance Bass Productions, as well as a now-defunct music management company, Free Lance Entertainment, a joint venture with Mercury Records.

Read more from his Wikipedia biography.

HOROSCOPE NOTES

The space-age planet Uranus is prominent in Bass's chart: appearing on his Scorpio IC in hard aspect with both luminaries. Bass moved to Star City, Russia, in 2002 and was certified by both NASA and the Russian Space Program after several months of cosmonaut training. However, his plan to join the TMA-1 mission to the International Space Station was unsuccessful after his financial sponsors backed out. Although his lifelong dream of space travel has been thwarted to date, in a 2007 interview with GQ magazine, Bass stated that he "absolutely" still intends on going to space, and that he hopes to work on a space documentary. With his angular Uranus in Scorpio (and unaspected Jupiter) he's unlikely to give up his space exploration plans anytime soon. Particularly because his Uranus is ruled by Pluto at the head of a Kite pattern: this guy just wants to fly, deeply, high and wide.

Bass came out as gay in a cover story for People magazine dated 26 July 2006. TR Moon crossed his ascendant that night and TR Uranus was conjunct his South Node. TR Neptune was opposite his Moon.

Gregg Allman (Updated Astrology data and chart)

* We have a time of birth of 3.23 AM for Gregg Allman from his recently released autobiography. Although rated "B," this data seems to override previous birth times rated "AA" (from quoted birth certificate). Such is the funny world of data research and collecting! Frank Clifford quotes the full name, Gregory LeNoir Allman, from the rock star's son's birth certificate (Elijah Blue Allman).

Gregg Allman is an American rock and blues singer-songwriter, keyboardist, guitarist and a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band. He was inducted with the band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2006.

Read more from his Wikipedia biography.

HOROSCOPE NOTES

In My Cross to Bear, Allman reveals that he probably acquired Hepatitis C when tattooed with "a centaur, for Sagittarius [his sun sign]" when he was aged 20 or 21. His natal Chiron (the centaur asteroid) at 18° Scorpio is squared by Pluto and Saturn in Leo, and exactly square their midpoint. Natal Chiron had moved by solar arc to conjoin natal Jupiter at 9° Sagittarius, his final dispositor (also very centaur-ian) at age 20-21. He had a liver transplant on 23 June 2010 with transiting Jupiter at 2° Aries on the cusp of his natal 6th House of health: the transplant operation proved successful and Allman recovered well and resumed touring. Allman, along with Natalie Cole has become a spokesperson for Tune In to Hep C which includes a PSA TV commercial.
