Witi Ihimaera (New Zealand author)

* Witi Ihimaera was the first published Māori novelist. Ihimaera is of Māori descent (Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki) and Anglo-Saxon descent through his father. His stories generally portray Māori culture in modern New Zealand. His work often focuses on problems within contemporary Māori society.

In 1995, Ihimaera published Nights in the Gardens of Spain, a semi-autobiographical work about a married father of two daughters coming out. He had come out to himself as gay in 1984 and began the work, but out of sensitivity to his daughters, did not finish or publish it then. Nights In The Gardens Of Spain was filmed in 2010 with changes to the book, making the central character Māori rather than Pākehā (European) to more closely reflect Ihimaera's life. His story The Whale Rider was also made into a film.

Wayde van Niekerk (South African track and field sprinter)

* Wayde van Niekerk competes in the 200 metres and 400 metres. He is the current world record holder, world champion and Olympic champion in the 400 metres. He is also the first person in history to run faster than 10 seconds for 100 metres, 20 seconds for 200 metres and 44 seconds for 400 metres.

In the 2016 Olympic Games Men's 400m, van Niekerk won the gold medal with a World Record time of 43.03 seconds (reaction time 0.181 s), beating the time of 43.18 seconds set by Michael Johnson during the 1999 World Championships in Athletics in Seville, Spain.

Dorian Leigh, 1917–2008 (American supermodel)

* Texan beauty, Dorian Leigh, was one of the earliest modelling icons of the fashion industry. She is considered one of the first supermodels, and was well known in the United States and Europe.

In 1952, when she was 35 years old, Richard Avedon photographed her for Revlon's most famous advertising campaign, Fire and Ice.

Her New York Times obituary noted that Leigh "combined pristine blue eyes, curling eyelashes, an arresting intelligence and intoxicating sexuality to become one of history’s most photographed models." The Guardian praised her "aerodynamic eyebrows."

Her stellium of planets in Taurus (including Sun, Moon and Venus) apparently manifested in exceptional good looks while Aries rising propelled her pioneering spirit.

Blaise Cendrars, 1887–1961 (Swiss-French novelist and poet)

* Blaise Cendrars was a writer of considerable influence in the European modernist movement. He was the first modernist poet, not only in terms of expressing the fundamental values of Modernism but also in terms of creating its first solid poetical synthesis. In 1912, in New York, he wrote his long poem, "Les Pâques à New York" (Easter in New York), his first important contribution to modern literature. He signed it for the first time with the name 'Blaise Cendrars.'

Back in Paris, Cendrars became an important part of the artistic community in Montparnasse; his writings were considered a literary epic of the modern adventurer. He was a friend of the American writer Henry Miller, and, in 1918, his friend Amedeo Modigliani painted his portrait. He died on 21 January 1961.

Louis Royer, 1793–1868 (Flemish sculptor)

* During his lifetime Louis Royer (AKA Lodewyk Royer) was the most important sculptor in the Netherlands. He was known as the "Canova of the Netherlands" and later was simply referred to as "the sculptor."

In 1823, Royer was the first sculptor to win the Dutch version of the Dutch Prix de Rome, which allowed him to study in Rome where he came under classicist influences. He gained a lot of admiration for his portrait of Pope Leo XII, whom he portrayed from life.

In 1827, he returned from Rome and settled in The Hague, an important artistic centre after the royal family had moved there from Amsterdam. He was soon appointed court sculptor and he made portraits of all members of the royal family in busts of marble. Shortly afterwards he was also appointed director of the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam.

After moving to Amsterdam in 1837, Royer received many public commissions for statues of leading personalities from Dutch history, such as the statues of Rembrandt and Joost van den Vondel in Amsterdam, William the Silent in The Hague and Michiel de Ruyter in Vlissingen.

He died in Amsterdam on 5 June 1868.

Léopold Survage, 1879–1968 (Russian-born French painter)

* In 1913, Léopold Survage produced abstract compositions entitled Rythmes colorés which used colour and movement to evoke a type of musical sensation. From 1917, he shared a studio — and a penchant for alcoholic excesses — with Amedeo Modigliani in Paris. Survage later moved to Nice where he produced highly structured oils and works on paper linked together by a series of leitmotifs, repeating groups of symbolic elements — man, sea, building, flower, window, curtain, bird — as if they were protagonists in a series of moving images. He died on 31 October 1968.

May Swenson, 1913–1989 (American poet and playwright)

* May Swenson is considered one of the most important and original poets of the 20th century. She channelled her rising Mars in Aries into the creation of poetry showing a strong use of imagery and eroticism. Some of her poems express intense love between women, written at a time when female homoeroticism was rare in poetry. Maria Gomes Valentim (Brazilian supercentenarian)

* Maria Gomes Valentim was the oldest verified living person in the world for a while before her death from multiple organ failure on 21 June 2011 at the age of 114 years 347 days. Valentim was the only validated supercentenarian from Brazil and one of the 30 verified oldest people in history. I always say that Cancer is the strongest sign in the zodiac; in Valentim's case tenaciously holding on to life and not giving in until the very end. Valentim had both luminaries and Venus in Cancer (all in the 4th house no less), with Venus ruling Mars, the ruler of her Aries ascendant.

Jack Huddle,1928–1973 (American rockabilly musician and songwriter)

* Jack Huddle performed and recorded with Buddy Holly early in Holly's career. In 1953 Huddle gave a young Buddy Holly a break when he let him perform with his friend Jack Neal as the Buddy & Jack duo on the talentshow "Around Lubbock." On April 28, 1957, Huddle made the trip to Clovis, New Mexico, together with his friend and writing partner Jim Robinson. Buddy Holly was also there or was asked by Jack to go with him. Buddy played lead guitar on the recordings made that day: "Starlight" and "Believe Me". The instrumental break on "Starlight" was often considered as one of the most catchy guitar breaks by Buddy on a non-Buddy or non-Crickets record. The session was kicked off by Jim Robinson (Jimmie Zed Robinson) singing "Whole Lot of Lovin'" and "It's a Wonderful Feeling." After that it was Huddle's turn. Jack and Jim recorded two other songs in Clovis in 1959. "Midnight Monsters Hop" and "Tarzan and Jane". Buddy didn't play on them. Jack and Jim also wrote "Frankie Frankenstein" that was recorded in Clovis and sung by Jerry Allison, Buddy Holly's drummer.

J. B. Floyd (America concert pianist, composer)

* J. B. Floyd is a concert pianist (jazz, classical, avant-garde, and the like), composer, and music pedagogue at the collegiate level. He has long-been a professor of music, which has included Chairman of Keyboard Performance, at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Floyd is a Yamaha Artist.

Damita Jo DeBlanc, 1930–1998 (American actress, comedian, lounge music performer)

* Damita Jo DeBlanc was the featured vocalist on recordings from Steve Gibson and the Red Caps during the 1950s. Credited as simply Damita Jo, DeBlanc had some chart success in the early 1960s with two answer songs: 1960's "I'll Save the Last Dance for You" (an answer to "Save the Last Dance for Me") and 1961's "I'll Be There" (an answer to "Stand By Me"). Both songs were originally sung by Ben E. King and made the R&B top 20, and "I'll Be There" also reached number 12 on the pop chart. In 1962 she recorded "Dance With a Dolly (With a Hole in her Stocking", previously made famous by The Andrews Sisters and Bill Haley, for Mercury Records. In 1966 she had a minor hit with a cover of the Jacques Brel song "If You Go Away." She worked with Ray Charles, Count Basie, and Lionel Hampton. And, in 1963, she released a recording for Mercury Records with Billy Eckstine and Bobby Tucker Orchestra. Damita Jo was later involved in comedy and toured with Redd Foxx. In 1998, she suffered a respiratory illness and died on Christmas Day in Baltimore, Maryland. 


DeBlanc had a moody Saturn-Moon conjunction in Capricorn on her MC.

Morty Corb, 1917—1996 (American jazz double-bassist)

* Morty Corb had a long career as a jazz musician that began in 1946 and lasted until his death. Corb performed for four years on Bob Crosby's television program. He also did extended work as a session musician in studios, and though he did little of this after the 1950s, he appears on some 300 recordings. He worked in bands in Disneyland after moving to California in 1947, and recorded his only album as a leader, Strictly from Dixie, in 1957. Corb was fascinated by Halloween and, from 1973, decked his house out with detailed, elaborate decorations. He incorporated some of what he had learned about special effects from the Disney studios, and continued to construct ever more ornate designs each year up until his death of a brain aneurysm in 1996.

Jesse Belvin, 1932–1960 (American R&B singer, pianist and songwriter)

* Jesse Belvin was a popular recording artist in the 1950s, but his success was cut short by his death in a car crash aged 27.

Belvin had Uranus in Aries on his Ascendant, as did James Dean. Each died in a car accident.

Jewel Akens, 1933–2013 (American singer and record producer)

* Jewel Akens recorded the single, "The Birds And The Bees," in 1965, and the song went to Number 3 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart that year, and Number 2 on the Cash Box chart. It reached Number 29 in the UK Singles Chart, selling over one million copies worldwide, and was awarded a gold disc. 

The lyric is based on the "birds and the bees" idiom commonly referenced with regard to affording young people their introductory sex education. Akens had an Aries Ascendant ruled by a very sexual Mars in Scorpio on his 8th house cusp, softened by a euphemistic sextile from Neptune. 

L.Q. Jones (American character actor, film director)

* L.Q. Jones appeared in numerous films in the 1960s and 1970s. He became a member of Sam Peckinpah's stock company of actors, appearing in his Klondike television series (1960–1961), Ride the High Country (1962), Major Dundee (1965), The Wild Bunch (1969), The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970), and Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid (1973). Jones also appeared in television, as recurring characters on such western programs as Cheyenne (1955), Gunsmoke (1955), Laramie, Two Faces West (1960–1961), and twenty-five times on The Virginian (1962) as ranch hand Andy Belden.

Harry Nilsson, 1941–1994 (American singer-songwriter)

* Double Grammy Award winner, Harry Nilsson, was a uniquely talented and original singer-songwriter. In the late 1960s and early 1970s when huge concert tours and festivals abounded, Nilsson broke the mould by achieving significant commercial success while shunning live performance and producing masterfully crafted studio recordings. Paul McCartney and John Lennon described him as the Beatles' "favourite group." A gifted composer, Nilsson wrote songs for the Ronettes, the Yardbirds, the Monkees, and more, yet his own biggest hits were almost all written by other songwriters. His producer Richard Perry described him as "the finest white male singer on the planet," but toward the end of his life, Nilsson's career was marked by voice-damaging substance abuse. All these adjectives might describe the Sun in the enigmatic Aquarian decan of paradoxical Gemini — which Nilsson had on the cusp of his 3rd House and at the apex of a T-Square involving an opposition between his Ascendant ruler, Mars in Pisces, and its ruler, musically-inspired but unfortunately all too often drugged-out Neptune.

Ellen Glasgow, 1873-1945 (American novelist)

* Family testimony reveals that Ellen Glasgow was born "precisely at four o'clock in the morning." The first degree of Aries was rising, with Mars in Scorpio ruling from the 8th in a Fixed Grand Cross. My favourite Glasgow quote: “The only difference between a rut and a grave are the dimensions.”

Ellen Anderson Gholson Glasgow (April 22, 1873 - November 21, 1945) was an American novelist who portrayed the changing world of the contemporary south.

As the United States women's suffrage movement was developing in the early 1900s, Glasgow marched in the English suffrage parades in the spring 1909. Later she spoke at the first suffrage meeting in Virginia. Glasgow felt that the movement came "at the wrong moment" for her, and her participation and interest waned. Glasgow did not at first make women’s roles her major theme, and she was slow to place heroines rather than heroes at the centers of her stories. Her later works, however, have heroines who display many of the attributes of women involved in the political movement.

In 1941 she published In This Our Life, which won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1942. In addition, it was quickly bought by Warner Brothers and adapted as a movie by the same name, released in 1942.

Her autobiography, The Woman Within, published after her death, details her progression as an author and the influences essential for her becoming an acclaimed Southern woman writer.

Bindi Irwin (Australian teen celebrity, newsmaker)

* 14-year-old Bindi Irwin was the subject of a death hoax on Twitter that trended online this week while transiting Saturn at 5° Scorpio in her natal 8th house semi-sextiled house-ruler natal Pluto at 5° Sagittarius. Solar Arc Jupiter at 12° Aries is currently exactly square her natal Mars at 12° Cancer, ruler of her natal first-degree-of-Aries wildlife-warrior Ascendant.

He has published five short story collections, four novels (including Elle which won the 2003 Governor-General's Award for Fiction), two books of essays, Notes Home from a Prodigal Son and Attack of the Copula Spiders, and The Enamoured Knight, a book-length meditation on Don Quixote and novel form. His 1993 novel, The Life and Times of Captain N., was edited by Gordon Lish and released by Alfred A. Knopf.

Since the early 1990s, Glover has lived in Wilton, New York teaching at the Vermont College of Fine Arts, Skidmore College, Colgate University, and the University of Albany. He was the 2005 McGee Professor of Writing at Davidson College. He has been writer-in-residence at the University of New Brunswick, the University of Lethbridge and Utah State University. From October, 1994, to October, 1996, he was host of a weekly radio interview program called The Book Show at WAMC in Albany, NY. From 1994 to 2006, he edited the annual anthology Best Canadian Stories. He writes regularly for international affairs magazine Global Brief. In 2010, he founded the online literary magazine, Numéro Cinq.
