Stephen Fry (English comedian, actor, writer, presenter)

* With a very close and very powerful conjunction of the Sun and Pluto on his 29° Leo Ascendant, Stephen Fry holds sway over the masses. An acclaimed comedian, he has won an Emmy, his books are bestsellers and he wields considerable influence through Twitter, having over four million followers. On the flipside, he has bipolar disorder and has attempted suicide on a number of occasions. Humour is perhaps his greatest asset, while the sextile from Neptune in the first degree of Scorpio to his tight triple conjunction is his saving grace.

Darrell Glenn, 1935-1990 (American singer-songwriter)

* Darrell Glenn made his mark in the music business with his 1953 recording of "Crying In the Chapel", written by his dad, Artie Glenn. His early recordings included "I Think I'm Falling In Love With You". "Crying in the Chapel" was covered by June Valli, Sonny Til & the Orioles and Elvis Presley; all versions becoming major hits. In 1959, Glenn re-recorded "Crying in the Chapel" for National Recording Corporation as the title track of an album of inspirational songs. The album has been re-released on CD by NRC. Glenn penned the Elvis release "Indescribably Blue".

"Crying In the Chapel"?? The Sun is in religious Sagittarius exactly conjunct the Ascendant, squared by teary Neptune high in the sky.

Jimmy Dean, 1928–2010 (American country music singer, television host, actor)

* Although he may be best known today as the creator of the Jimmy Dean sausage brand, he became a national television personality starting in 1957, rising to fame for his 1961 country crossover hit "Big Bad John" and his television series, The Jimmy Dean Show, which also gave puppeteer Jim Henson his first national media exposure. His acting career included a supporting role as Willard Whyte in the 1971 James Bond movie, Diamonds Are Forever. He lived near Richmond, Virginia, and was nominated for the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010, although he was formally inducted posthumously.

Morty Corb, 1917—1996 (American jazz double-bassist)

* Morty Corb had a long career as a jazz musician that began in 1946 and lasted until his death. Corb performed for four years on Bob Crosby's television program. He also did extended work as a session musician in studios, and though he did little of this after the 1950s, he appears on some 300 recordings. He worked in bands in Disneyland after moving to California in 1947, and recorded his only album as a leader, Strictly from Dixie, in 1957. Corb was fascinated by Halloween and, from 1973, decked his house out with detailed, elaborate decorations. He incorporated some of what he had learned about special effects from the Disney studios, and continued to construct ever more ornate designs each year up until his death of a brain aneurysm in 1996.

He is best known as the goofy character, Icky Twerp (shortened from "Ichamore Twerpwhistle"), host of Slam Bang Theatre, an afternoon kids’ show which presented cartoons and Three Stooges comedies. Roger Sessions, 1896-1985 (American composer, critic, teacher of music)

* In her recently released biography of Roger Sessions, Andrea Olmstead quotes his birth certificate for a birth time of "7:00 a.m." Previously, I quoted a biography of Sessions by the same author for a birth time of "on the morning ... just in time to be welcomed by daylight."

Sessions had the Sun rising in Capricorn in the 1st house. He was one of the leading American composers of the 20th century, and he was twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

His first major compositions came while he was travelling Europe with his wife in his mid-twenties and early thirties. Returning to the United States in 1933, he taught first at Princeton University (from 1936), moved to the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught from 1945 to 1953, and then returned to Princeton until retiring in 1965. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1961. He was appointed Bloch Professor at Berkeley (1966–67), and gave the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures at Harvard University in 1968–69. He continued to teach on a part-time basis at the Juilliard School from 1966 until 1983.

His works written up to 1930 or so are more or less neoclassical in style. Those written between 1930 and 1940 are more or less tonal but harmonically complex. The works from 1946 on are atonal, and beginning with the Solo Violin Sonata of 1953, serial.

Marie-Louise von Motesiczky (Austrian exiled artist)

* During the Nazi annexation of Vienna in 1938, Marie-Louise von Motesiczky and her mother fled her homeland of Austria to seek refuge in London where she would be based for nearly six decades, working among other exiled artists. As an artist-foreigner, she embodied the archetype of her Venus in Sagittarius. With her Sun rising at 29° Libra, it was only at the end of her life that Motesiczky gained recognition as one of Austria’s most important 20th-century painters. Her biography is titled "the undiscovered expressionist": Venus, as ruler of her Sun and Ascendant, is unaspected except for a restrictive square from a retrograde Saturn.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Marie-Louise von Motesiczky was born in Vienna to an aristocratic family. As her family included Jewish descent, she had to flee the Nazi annexation of Vienna in 1938. Motesiczky, accompanied by her mother Henriette, fled to London. Following the end of the war, Motesiczky exhibited her paintings in many European institutions and she continued to work from her house in London, where she lived only with her mother and a single maid. Motesiczky's major breakthrough in the UK occurred in 1985, with a major retrospective at the Goethe Institute in London, which generated much acclaim and saw her reputation as a major Austrian artist cemented. She died in London on June 10, 1996.

SOURCE: Sy Scholfield (©) quotes Jill Lloyd, The Undiscovered Expressionist: A Life of Marie-Louise Von Motesiczky (Yale University Press, 2007), p. 31: "Marie-Louise von Motesiczky entered the world on 24 October 1906, when Vienna was basking in a fine Indian summer. Henriette was feeling so well in the days preceding the birth that she even spent an evening at the theatre. Edmund, who had been enjoying the hunting season at Vazsony, returned to Vienna just in time; a few hours after Henriette collected him from the station, the doctor was called, and by six o'clock the following morning, Marie-Louise was born. . . On Marie-Louise's baptism certificate into the Evangelical Church, her name is recorded as Marie Luise Josefine Alice von Motesiczky."

Lawrence "Titus" Oates, 1880–1912 (English Cavalry officer, Antarctic explorer)

* Captain Laurie "Titus" Oates had the last degree of self-sacrificing Pisces ― and final degree of the icy and deadly Scorpio decan ― on his Ascendant. Oates is famous for his honourable suicide in Antarctica in 1912: afflicted with gangrene and frostbite, and aware his ill health was compromising his three companions' chances of survival, he chose certain death, supposedly telling them, "I am just going outside and may be some time," before walking out into a blizzard amid −40°C/F temperatures.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Captain Lawrence Edward Grace ("Titus") Oates (17 March 1880 – 17 March 1912) was an English Cavalry officer with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, and later on in his life an Antarctic explorer, who died during the Terra Nova Expedition. Oates, afflicted with gangrene and frostbite, walked from his tent into a blizzard. His death is seen as an act of self-sacrifice when, aware his ill health was compromising his three companions' chances of survival, he chose certain death.

* Arnold Palmer ― the "superstar" golfer nicknamed "The King" ― has the royal Sun rising in the first house at the apex of a T-square.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Arnold Daniel Palmer (born September 10, 1929) is generally regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of men's professional golf. He has won numerous events on both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour, dating back to 1955. He is part of "The Big Three" in golf, along with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, who are widely credited with popularizing and commercialising the sport around the world.

Ingmar Bergman, 1918–2007 (Swedish director, writer and producer for stage & screen)

* Ingmar Bergman ― described by Woody Allen as "probably the greatest film artist, all things considered, since the invention of the motion picture camera" ― had the artistic Sun rising and ruling cinematic Neptune in conjunction with Mercury and Saturn in masterly Leo. Furthermore, his Ascendant and unaspected Sun were in the Piscean decan and duad of Cancer while Neptune ruled his Pisces MC.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Ernst Ingmar Bergman (14 July 1918 – 30 July 2007) is recognized as one of the most accomplished and influential film directors of all time. He directed over sixty films and documentaries for cinematic release and for television, most of which he also wrote. He also directed over one hundred and seventy plays. Among his company of actors were Harriet Andersson, Liv Ullmann, Gunnar Björnstrand, Bibi Andersson, Erland Josephson, Ingrid Thulin and Max von Sydow. Most of his films were set in the landscape of Sweden. His major subjects were death, illness, faith, betrayal, bleakness and insanity.

Bergman was active for more than six decades. In 1976, his career was seriously threatened as the result of a botched criminal investigation for alleged income tax evasion. Outraged, Bergman suspended a number of pending productions, closed his studios, and went into self-imposed exile in West Germany for eight years.

Henri Duveyrier, 1840–1892 (French explorer)

* Henri Duveyrier, the French explorer of the Sahara - one of the hottest regions on the planet - had Saturn in the Leo decan of Sagittarius close to his MC. One can imagine the harshness of the Sun beating down on him.

Henri Duveyrier (28 February 1840 – 25 April 1892) was a French explorer of the Sahara born in Paris. In 1857 and 1858, he spent some months in London, where he met Heinrich Barth, then preparing the narrative of his travels in the western Sudan. At the age of nineteen Duveyrier, who had already learned Arabic, began a journey in the northern parts of the Sahara which lasted nearly three years. In 1864, two years after returning to France, he published Exploration du Sahara: les Touareg du nord (Exploration of the Sahara: Tuaregs of the North), for which he received the gold medal of the Paris Geographical Society. In the war of 1870 he was taken prisoner by the Germans. Subsequently he made several other journeys in the Sahara, adding considerably to the knowledge of the regions immediately south of the Atlas, from the eastern confines of Morocco to Tunisia. He also examined the Algerian and Tunisian shats and explored the interior of western Tripoli. Duveyrier devoted special attention to the customs and speech of the Tuareg people, with whom he lived for months at a time, and to the organization of the Senussi. In 1881 he published La Tunisie, and in 1884 La confrérie musulmane de Sîdî Mohammed ben Alî-Senoûsi et son domaine géographique en l'année 1300 de l'Hégire.
