Georges Claude, 1870–1960 (French engineer and inventor)

* Georges Claude is noted as the inventor of neon lighting, and for his early work on the industrial liquefaction of air, and for a large experiment on generating energy by pumping cold seawater up from the depths. He has been considered by some to be "the Edison of France". Claude was an active collaborator with the German occupiers of France during the Second World War, for which he was imprisoned in 1945 and stripped of his honours. He died on 21 May 1960, aged 89, in Saint-Cloud, France.

Jérôme Jarre (French entrepreneur, internet personality)

* Thanks to Marc Brun (merci beaucoup!) we have the data for Jérôme Jarre ( Jérôme Chappelet), who was the fourth most followed individual on Vine, as of June 2014 (currently he has over 8 million followers and a mind-boggling 1,406,962,445 Loops). The same month he became one of the first Snapchat celebrities. After starting several businesses in China and Canada, Jarre started posting videos on Vine the day of its launch. Thereafter he left his business to completely focus on Vine. In May 2013, he co-founded GrapeStory, a talent agency for Vine and Snapchat stars.

After being featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen asked him to cover the Red Carpet ceremony of the 86th Academy Awards, where he made multiple vines with Hollywood actors. Later he was hired by Canal+ to cover 2014 Cannes Film Festival. At the Tribeca Film Festival 2014, he was one of the jurors of the 6 second films competition. Jarre has made vines with several Hollywood artists including Robert De Niro, Pharrell Williams, Ashton Kutcher, Ben Stiller, Ansel Elgort, and Kristen Bell.

Jarre was strongly criticized by the Vine community for posting a Vine in which he played a kiss prank on John Stamos and Stamos returned the kiss. The vine was posted in June 2014, and the commenters "accused" him of being gay and threatened to unfollow him for it. Jarre posted a follow-up Vine video the next day to call out these individuals directly. In it, he claimed he's not gay, then proceeded to kiss a fellow Vine star Nicholas Megalis on the mouth to show support for the LGBT community.

Blaise Cendrars, 1887–1961 (Swiss-French novelist and poet)

* Blaise Cendrars was a writer of considerable influence in the European modernist movement. He was the first modernist poet, not only in terms of expressing the fundamental values of Modernism but also in terms of creating its first solid poetical synthesis. In 1912, in New York, he wrote his long poem, "Les Pâques à New York" (Easter in New York), his first important contribution to modern literature. He signed it for the first time with the name 'Blaise Cendrars.'

Back in Paris, Cendrars became an important part of the artistic community in Montparnasse; his writings were considered a literary epic of the modern adventurer. He was a friend of the American writer Henry Miller, and, in 1918, his friend Amedeo Modigliani painted his portrait. He died on 21 January 1961.

Léopold Survage, 1879–1968 (Russian-born French painter)

* In 1913, Léopold Survage produced abstract compositions entitled Rythmes colorés which used colour and movement to evoke a type of musical sensation. From 1917, he shared a studio — and a penchant for alcoholic excesses — with Amedeo Modigliani in Paris. Survage later moved to Nice where he produced highly structured oils and works on paper linked together by a series of leitmotifs, repeating groups of symbolic elements — man, sea, building, flower, window, curtain, bird — as if they were protagonists in a series of moving images. He died on 31 October 1968.

Diana Vreeland, 1903–1989 (French-American magazine editor and fashion journalist)

* Wikipedia gives at least two different dates of birth for Diana Vreeland (29/7/1903 and 29/9/1903) and her birth certificate gives another (29/12/1903), but the certificate is dated 2 October 1903. Clearly the December date is an impossibility: the clerk made a mistake and should have written "29 September," which is the date specified in her birth notice published in The Times [London, England] on 2 October 1903.

Many thanks to Marc Brun for acquiring the birth certificate for us!

Vreeland is a fashion icon: Neptune on her Ascendant rules Jupiter in Pisces on her MC. From 1936 until her resignation in 1962, she ran a column for Harper's Bazaar called "Why Don't You?". She was editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine from 1963 until 1971. Vreeland advised First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in matters of style and she is credited with inventing the word "pizzazz."

Neptune on the Ascendant can also bring confusion about the circumstances of a person's birth but in Vreeland's case the mystery surrounding her date of birth has now been solved!

Madame Fraya, 1871-1954 (French chiromancer)

* Madame Fraya (born Valentine Dencausse) was probably the most famous chiromancer in Paris during the first half of the 20th century.

Her clients included important French artists and politicians of the time, such as the Princess of Saxe-Meningen (sister of emperor Wilhelm II of Germany), to whom she reportedly predicted World War I and the defeat of Germany. She was subsequently called into the French Ministry of War, where she assured the government that the marching German troops would not reach Paris (they were in fact stopped at the First Battle of the Marne).

The abilities displayed by Valentine Dencausse were studied by prominent scientists such as Alfred Binet, Eugene Osty, and Albert von Schrenck-Notzing.

She died on 16 February 1954 at 12:30pm in Paris.

Capucine, 1928-1990 (French fashion model, actress, suicide)

* Capucine - the beautiful comedienne - was best known for her comedic roles in the feline-titled films, The Pink Panther (1963) and What's New Pussycat? (1965). Funnily enough, she had cinematic Neptune in Leo, the sign of the Lion/ess - without close aspects - except for a square to lovely Venus in side-splitting Sagittarius which ruled her Taurus Ascendant. Tragically, a quarter century after she hit the heights of stardom, Capucine jumped from her eighth-floor apartment to her death. Perhaps her suicidal fall was a symptom of her Capricorn Sun on the MC opposite Pluto on her IC?

Many thanks to Marc Brun for sending me her birth certificate.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Capucine (6 January 1928 – 17 March 1990) appeared in 36 films and 17 television productions between 1948 and 1990.

In her teens, she became a fashion model, working for fashion houses Givenchy and Christian Dior. She adopted the name, "Capucine" (French for nasturtium). She met Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn modeling in Givenchy (with whom Hepburn was best friends and whose muse she was) in Paris. The two would remain close friends for the rest of Capucine's life.

On the set of Rendez-vous (1949), she met Pierre Trabaud; they married the next year. The marriage lasted only eight months, and Capucine never married again. She met actor William Holden in the early 1960s. They starred in the films The Lion (1962) and The 7th Dawn (1964). Holden was married to Brenda Marshall, but the two began a two-year affair. After the affair ended, she and Holden remained friends until Holden's death in 1981.

On 17 March 1990, Capucine jumped from her eighth-floor apartment in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she had lived for 28 years, having reportedly suffered from illness and depression for some time.

Charles Blondin, 1824-1897 (French tightrope walker and acrobat)

* In the chart of Charles Blondin - called the "Chevalier Blondin", or more simply "The Great Blondin" - we find a classic bucket shape with bold-and-brave Mars in Libra (the sign of Balance) as the handle. Blondin was the most famous tightrope walker of the 19th century. The first to walk a rope across the Niagara, he performed around the world: in London, Dublin and Sydney. For his signature act he would cook an omelette midway along the tightrope and then eat it (or offer it to his audience) while drinking a glass of champagne. How very French! How very death-defying Pluto in the 8th at the apex of a T-square (ruled by a daredevil Mars bucket-handle in sextile with an Ascendant in show-off Leo)!

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Charles Blondin won worldwide acclaim when he crossed the Niagara Gorge (located on the American-Canadian border) on a tightrope, 1,100 ft (340 m) long, 3.25 in (8.3 cm) in diameter and 160 ft (49 m) above the water, on 30 June 1859, and a number of times thereafter, always with different theatrical variations: blindfolded, in a sack, trundling a wheelbarrow, on stilts, carrying a man (his manager, Harry Colcord) on his back, sitting down midway while he cooked and ate an omelet and standing on a chair with only one chair leg on the rope.

In 1861, Blondin first appeared in London, at the Crystal Palace, turning somersaults on stilts on a rope stretched across the central transept, 70 feet (20 m) from the ground. The same year, he performed in Edinburgh, Scotland at the Royal Botanic Gardens, and at the Royal Portobello Gardens, Dublin. In 1874 he performed in Australia.

During his lifetime, Blondin's name was so synonymous with tightrope walking that many employed the name "Blondin" to describe others in the profession. For example there were at least five people working with variations of the Blondin name in Sydney in the 1880s, the most famous of whom was Henri L'Estrange - "the Australian Blondin".

Charles Blondin died of diabetes at his "Niagara House" in Ealing, London on 22 February 1897, aged 73.

Cornélie Falcon, 1814–1897 (French soprano)

* Biographies give Cornélie Falcon's year of birth as 1812 or 1814, while her place of birth is stated as the town of Le Monastier sur Gazeille in the Haute-Loire département in south-central France. However, a simple check of the birth records shows that she was born at rue du Béthizy, n° 10, quartier Saint-Honoré in Paris in 1814. Her Gemini Ascendant was ruled by Mercury in Capricorn. Like the Goat that scales mountains, her voice could climb from low A-flat to high D.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Cornélie Falcon (28 January 1814 – 25 February 1897) was a French soprano who sang at the Opéra in Paris. Her greatest success was creating the role of Valentine in Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots. She possessed "a full, resonant voice" with a distinctive dark timbre and was an exceptional actress. Based on the roles written for her voice her vocal range spanned from low A-flat to high D, 2.5 octaves. She and the tenor Adolphe Nourrit are credited with being primarily responsible for raising artistic standards at the Opéra, and the roles in which she excelled came to be known as "falcon soprano" parts. She had an exceptionally short career, essentially ending about five years after her debut, when at the age of 23 she lost her voice during a performance of Niedermeyer's Stradella.

Julie Vellay Pissarro (French artist's model)

* Julie Vellay, who was the mistress, then the wife, of the painter Camille Pissarro (known as the "Father of Impressionism"), also posed for him. As the devoted mother to their brood of children, she had the Moon in the domestic 4th House on the IC. Her Moon was in artistic Pisces under trine from Saturn in Scorpio on her Ascendant: They had eight children, one who died at birth and one daughter who died aged nine. The surviving children all painted, and Lucien (see his chart), the oldest son, became a landscape artist.

Biography

Julie Vellay, the peasant daughter of a vineyard grower, was employed as a maid in the household of the mother of Camille Pissarro (1830-1903). Vellay became his mistress in 1860 and they were married in London in 1871 while she was pregnant with their third child. After returning to France later that year they lived outside of Paris in Pontoise and later in Louveciennes, both places inspiring many of his paintings including scenes of village life, along with rivers, woods, and people at work. Julie Pissarro died, aged 87, on 16 May 1926 in Éragny, Oise, France.

Lucien Pissarro, 1863-1944 (French-born British artist)

* Lucien Pissarro - noted for his landscape paintings of the French and English countrysides - had earthy Saturn in artistic Libra in quincunx aspect with his Pisces Sun, ruler of his Leo MC. A very creative astrological combination, not to mention Pluto in rural Taurus ruling his Ascendant and squaring his MC.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Lucien Pissarro (20 February 1863 – 10 July 1944) was a landscape painter, printmaker, wood engraver and designer and printer of fine books. His landscape paintings employ techniques of Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, but he also exhibited with Les XX. Apart from his landscapes he painted a few still lifes and family portraits. Until 1890 he worked in France, but thereafter was based in Britain.

He was the oldest of seven children of the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro and his wife Julie Vellay Pissarro (see her chart).

In 1916, Lucien Pissarro became a British citizen. While in Britain he was one of the founders of the Camden Town Group of artists. From 1922 to 1937 he painted regularly in the south of France, interspersed with painting expeditions to Derbyshire, south Wales and Essex. From 1934 to 1944 he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. He died in Hewood, Somerset.

Renée Jolivet (French nursemaid, artist's model)

* Renée Jolivet - nursemaid to the family of Auguste Renoir - is seen here in his painting, Claude and Renée, holding Auguste's son Claude "Clo-Clo" Renoir.
Her Venus is closely conjunct the painter's Neptune and Ascendant: She epitomised his preference for full-bodied women (See their charts below).
Later in life, Jolivet ran a delicatessen shop in Montmartre. Nursing and retail occupations are typical for a person with a Virgo Ascendant.

Biography

Renée Jolivet was a maid and nurse in the household of the painter, Auguste Renoir. She was the daughter of a day labourer and his wife who delivered Auguste's son, Claude. Jolivet posed for Auguste in the period 1901-1904. Jolivet was considered by Auguste's son Jean Renoir to be the most memorable of the nursemaids and models after Gabrielle Renard. In 1904 Jolivet left the Renoir household. She was married twice and had a daughter. For a time Jolivet ran a small grocery shop in Montmartre. She died on 25 October 1973.

Gabrielle Renard, 1878–1959 (French nanny, artist's model)

* In this painting by Auguste Renoir, Gabrielle Renard plays with his son Jean. As both nanny and artist's model, Renard here embodies her Venus in Cancer - which rises in her chart and conjuncts the horizon of Jean Renoir's chart. Gabrielle and Jean not only shared the same Ascendant sign, they shared a lifelong bond. Her Moon is on his IC: their bond was nurtured by her loving influence over him. She took the young Jean to see his first movie. One day he would become an acclaimed filmmaker.

See their data and charts below.

WIKIPEDIA BLURB

Gabrielle Renard (August 1, 1878 – February 26, 1959) was a French woman who became an important member of the family of the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, first becoming a nanny and subsequently, a frequent model for the artist. Upon her marriage in 1921 she became Gabrielle Renard-Slade.

Born in Essoyes in the Aube departement of France, she was a cousin of Aline Victorine Charigot Renoir, who had married the painter, Pierre-Auguste. The village was the birthplace of Aline also. At age sixteen, Gabrielle Renard moved to Montmartre to live and work as a nanny in her cousin's household, where the second of the three Renoir sons was about to be born. Renard became the subject of a number of Renoir's portraits, many of her with the children.

Gabrielle Renard developed a strong bond with the infant, Jean Renoir, that would last throughout their lives. She introduced him to the Guignol puppet shows that were held in the Montmartre.
