Buck Clayton, 1911–1991 (American jazz trumpet player)

* Buck Clayton was a leading member of Count Basie’s "Old Testament" orchestra and a leader of mainstream-oriented jam session recordings in the 1950s. His principal influence was Louis Armstrong. The Penguin Guide to Jazz says that he “synthesi[zed] much of the history of jazz trumpet up to his own time, with a bright brassy tone and an apparently limitless facility for melodic improvisation”. Clayton worked closely with Li Jinhui, father of Chinese popular music in Shanghai. His contributions helped change musical history in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Margaret Fulton (British-Australian food and cooking writer, journalist, author, commentator)

* In her early recipes Margaret Fulton encouraged Australian housewives to alter the Australian staple of "meat and three vegetables" and to be creative with food. She 'discovered' food from exotic places such as Spain, Italy, India and China.

In 2006, The Bulletin named Fulton in their list of 'The 100 most influential Australians,' writing that she is "Australia's original domestic goddess. No cookery writer since can claim her blanket influence... Fulton turned us into foodies."

The Sun in Australia's chart is at 10° Capricorn and the MC at 2° Aquarius. Fulton's Ascendant (9° Capricorn) and Moon (26° Capricoen) conjunct these points, cementing her status as an "Australian Living Treasure."

Lois Lowry (American writer)

* Lois Lowry has written more than thirty children's books and an autobiography. For her contribution as a children's writer, she was a finalist in 2000 (and U.S. nominee again in 2004) for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award, the highest recognition available to creators of children's books.

Lowry is known for writing about difficult subject matters within her works for children. She has explored such complex issues as racism, terminal illness, murder, and the Holocaust among other challenging topics.

In her chart she has Mars and Pluto in a Grand Trine with her triple conjunction of Mercury-Saturn-Sun. This combination indicates success (Saturn-Sun) through writing (Mercury) about challenging (Mars) and complex (Pluto) subjects.

Baccio Bandinelli (Italian Renaissance sculptor, draughtsman and painter)

* Pluto and its sign Scorpio are associated with intense jealousy. Baccio Bandinelli had Pluto in Scorpio opposite his Ascendant (smack-bang on his 7th cusp) ruling the Sun in the last degree of Scorpio (also in the 7th). Notorious for his envy (of other artists), he obsessively imitated the works of Michelangelo whom he saw as a rival, and he tried to sabotage Benvenuto Cellini's career. Bandinelli's Venus (arts, values, relationships) ruled his Ascendant from Pluto's domain: the 8th House. His Venus was also conjunct Michelangelo's Ascendant.
NATAL DATA and ASTROLOGY CHART

BIRTH DATA: Bartolommeo Brandini, 12 November 1493 OS, 15:25 (3:25 PM) LMT (-0:45), Florence, Italy (43n46, 11e15). ASC: 8 Taurus. RR: B (from biography, but birth records are indicated). SOURCE: Sy Scholfield cites birth documents quoted in "Baccio Bandinelli and art at the Medici court: a corpus of early modern sources, Volume 251" by Louis Alexander Waldman (American Philosophical Society, 2004), p. 7: "born in Florence (an hour before sunset) and baptized the following day . . . In the earlier literature BB's birthdate was often given as 1488, based on the erroneous assumption that the baptismal record of his uncle, Bartolomeo di Viviano di Bartolomeo, dated 7 October 1488 (Doc. 11), referred to him. In the 'Libri d'età' of the Archivio delle Tratte, however, the correct birthdate is corroborated: 'Messer Bartolomeo di Michelagnolo di Viviano Bandinelli adì 12 di novembre 1493' (ASF, Tratte, 81 [ex 444bis], fol. 9). 21. 1493, November 13." * Renato Russo was born right on an Aries New Moon with both luminaries aspected by Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto. His first band, the punk rock group with the Plutonic name "Aborto Elétrico" (Electric Abortion) eventually split into two different bands: "Capital Inicial" and "Legião Urbana". Under Russo's leadership and the good fortune of his Jupiter and Neptune, Legião Urbana sold around 20 million albums during Russo's lifetime.

Johnny Bush (American country music singer, songwriter, and drummer)

* Johnny Bush, nicknamed the "Country Caruso," is best known for his distinctive voice and as the writer of "Whiskey River," a top-ten hit for himself and Willie Nelson's signature song. In the early 1970s, Bush lost half of his vocal range and was sometimes unable to talk. RCA dropped him in 1974 after three albums, he developed a drug habit, and was often stricken with performance anxiety. After several misdiagnoses, doctors diagnosed the cause in 1978, when they discovered he had a rare neurological disorder called spasmodic dysphonia. He worked with a vocal coach in 1985, and was able to regain seventy percent of his original voice. Bush has an exact conjunction of Mercury and the Sun (vocal expression) quincunxed by Pluto in the 6th, the House of health issues.

George "Spanky" McFarland, 1928–1993 (American child actor)

* "Spanky" McFarland was most famous for his appearances as a child in the Our Gang series of short-subject comedies of the 1930s and 1940s. The Our Gang shorts were later syndicated to television as The Little Rascals. His nickname "Spanky" came from the term "a spanky child" which was late 19th century–early 20th century slang for an intelligent, gifted toddler. McFarland had a bright and sharp conjunction of Venus and Mercury on his Scorpio MC.

* Dickie Jones achieved some success as a child actor and as a young adult, especially in B-Westerns and television.

Jupiter is known for exaggeration: Jones has Jupiter conjunct his Sun and ruling his Sagittarius Moon. He is probably best known as the voice of Pinocchio — the liar whose nose grows to inordinate lengths — in the 1940 Walt Disney film Pinocchio

John A. Alonzo, 1934-2001 (American cinematographer)

* John A. Alonzo — the pioneering cinematographer — had trailblazing Mars square cinematic Neptune. With Pluto exactly conjunct his Descendant and ruling his Scorpio MC, he is probably best known for his acclaimed camera work on two American classics: the part mystery and part psychological drama film, Chinatown (1974), and the gangster mob movie, Scarface (1983), yet his extraordinary list of films includes Harold & Maude, Vanishing Point, Sounder, Norma Rae, Farewell, My Lovely, Blue Thunder, Internal Affairs and many others.

Jane Avril, 1868–1943 (French can-can dancer)

* Jane Avril was the extremely thin can-can dancer made famous by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec through his paintings. Nicknamed La Mélinite after an explosive ― because she was "given to jerky movements and sudden contortions" ― Avril had a detonative Mars-Pluto conjunction straddling her Descendant with Pluto opposite and ruling her Scorpio Ascendant. Nicole Kidman, the Australian actor nominated for an Oscar for her semi-fictionalized portayal of Avril in Baz Luhrmann's 2001 musical,Moulin Rouge!, also has a Gemini Sun and Scorpio rising.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Jane Avril's mother was a courtesan and her absent father, allegedly, was a foreign aristocrat. Abused as a child, she ran away from home, and was eventually admitted to the Salpêtrière Hospital, with the movement disorder 'St Vitus' Dance' (now thought to be Sydenham's Chorea). Under the care of Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot, the expert on "female hysterics" she received various kinds of treatment, and claimed in her biography that, when she discovered dance at a social dance for employees and patients at the hospital, she was cured. On leaving the hospital, after a failed romance, Jeanne thought to kill herself, but was taken in by the Madame of a Parisian brothel.

Working at whatever day jobs were available, at night she pursued a career in dancing by performing at local clubs. Using the stage name Jane Avril, she built a reputation that eventually allowed her to make a living as a full-time dancer. Hired by the Moulin Rouge nightclub in 1889, within a few years she headlined at the Jardin de Paris, one of the major café-concerts on the Champs-Élysées. To advertise the extravaganza, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec painted her portrait on a poster that elevated her stature in the entertainment world even further.

In 1895, the owners of the Moulin Rouge offered her a great deal of money to take on the risky task of replacing Louise Weber, the most famous dancer in Paris, known by her stage name as "La Goulue". Graceful, soft-spoken, and melancholic, Jane Avril gave a dance presentation that was the opposite of the very boisterous La Goulue. Nevertheless, the club's patrons adored her and she became one of the most recognizable names of the Parisian nightlife.

A woman of intelligence and with a sense of aloof grace, at age 42 she met and married the German artist, Maurice Biais (c.1875–1926), and the couple moved to a home in Jouy-en-Josas at the outskirts of Paris. However, her husband soon began to stray, often disappearing for days at a time, and for years she lived a miserable existence with the irresponsible Biais. Without any financial support following his death in 1926, Avril lived in near poverty on what little was left of her savings.

Jane Avril died in a seniors' home in 1943 at the age of 75. She was interred in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

Piero di Cosimo, 1462–1522 (Italian Renaissance painter)

* Piero di Cosimo had five planets and his Ascendant in Aquarius. No wonder, then, that he acquired a reputation for eccentricity during his lifetime.

Piero di Cosimo (2 January 1462 – 12 April 1522), also known as Piero di Lorenzo, was born in Florence and apprenticed under the artist Cosimo Rosseli, from whom he derived his popular name and whom he assisted in the painting of the Sistine Chapel in 1481.

In the first phase of his career, Piero was influenced by the Netherlandish naturalism of Hugo van der Goes, whose Portinari Triptych (now at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence) helped to lead the whole of Florentine painting into new channels. From him, most probably, Cosimo acquired the love of landscape and the intimate knowledge of the growth of flowers and of animal life.

He journeyed to Rome in 1482 with his master, Rosselli. He proved himself a true child of the Renaissance by depicting subjects of Classical mythology in such pictures as the Venus, Mars, and Cupid, The Death of Procris, the Perseus and Andromeda series, at the Uffizi, and many others. Inspired to the Vitruvius' account of the evolution of man, Piero's mythical compositions show the bizarre presence of hybrid forms of men and animals, or the man learning to use fire and tools.

During his lifetime, Cosimo acquired a reputation for eccentricity. Reportedly, he was frightened of thunderstorms, and so pyrophobic that he rarely cooked his food; he lived largely on hard-boiled eggs, which he prepared 50 at a time while boiling glue for his artworks. He also resisted any cleaning of his studio, or trimming of the fruit trees of his orchard; he lived, wrote Vasari, "more like a beast than a man".

Piero enjoyed a great reputation as a portrait painter: the most famous of his work is in fact the portrait of a Florentine noblewoman, Simonetta Vespucci, mistress of Giuliano de' Medici.

SOURCE: Sy Scholfield (c) quotes Dennis Geronimus's article, "The birth date, ealy life, and career of Piero di Cosimo" (The Art Bulletin, New York: March 2000. Vol. 82, Iss. 1; pg. 164, 7 pgs): "A new database of Florentine baptismal records, currently being compiled by Karl Schlebusch and Anne Schleicher, provided a list of all males born and baptized as Piero di Lorenzo in Florence between 1450 and 1470, allowing the discovery of a new document specifically recording that Piero di Lorenzo di Piero, of the parish of S. Lorenzo, was born at fifteen hours after sundown (approximately nine in the morning) on January 2, 1462, and baptized on the same day. ... The Italian hours are explained briefly in E. H. Ramsden, The Letters of Michelangelo, vol. 1 (London: Peter Owen, 1963). Sunset marked the beginning of the day, meaning that the first hour varied from day to day; the same hour, therefore, represented a different time in each of the seasons. In the case of Piero's birth, fifteen hours (after sunset) in January would be equivalent to roughly nine in the morning."

Martín Ramírez, 1895-1963 (Mexican-American outsider artist, catatonic schizophrenic)

* The institutionalized outsider artist, Martin Ramirez, had Venus in Aquarius square its ruler Uranus in Scorpio in the 12th House.

Martín Ramírez (March 31, 1895 – February 17, 1963) was a self-taught artist who spent most of his adult life institutionalized in California mental hospitals, diagnosed as a catatonic schizophrenic.

Having migrated to the United States from Tepatitlan, Mexico in 1925, Ramírez was institutionalized in 1931, first at Stockton State Hospital in Stockton, California, then, beginning in 1948, at DeWitt State Hospital in Auburn, near Sacramento, where he made the drawings and collages for which he is now known. At DeWitt, a visiting professor of psychology and art, Tarmo Pasto, came across Ramírez's work and began to save the large-scale works Ramírez made using available materials, including brown paper bags, scraps of examining-table paper, and book pages glued together with a paste made of potatoes and saliva. His works display an idiosyncratic iconography that reflect both Mexican folk traditions and twentieth-century modernization: images of Madonnas, horseback riders, and trains entering and exiting tunnels proliferate in the work, along with undulating fields of concentric lines that describe landscapes, tunnels, theatrical prosceniums, and decorative patterns.

Since his death in 1963, Ramírez's drawings and collages have become some of the most highly valued examples of outsider art.

In January 2007, the American Folk Art Museum in New York City opened "Martín Ramírez," the first major retrospective of the artist's work in the United States in more than 20 years. The exhibition featured about 100 of the 300 drawings and collages that had then been known to exist. It was accompanied by a catalog that includes a biographical essay, written by sociologists Víctor M. Espinosa and Kristin E. Espinosa, which discusses many previously unpublished details of Ramírez's life. The exhibition subsequently traveled to the San Jose Museum of Art (June–September 2007) and the Milwaukee Art Museum (October 2007–January 2008).

Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster (English landowner, politician, racehorse owner)

* Hugh Grosvenor, considered to be the richest man in Britain at his death, "was born at four in the morning" according to a biography.

Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster KG, PC, JP (13 October 1825 – 22 December 1899), styled Viscount Belgrave between 1831 and 1845 and Earl Grosvenor between 1845 and 1869 and known as The Marquess of Westminster between 1869 and 1874, was an English landowner, politician and racehorse owner.

He inherited the estate of Eaton Hall in Cheshire and land in Mayfair and Belgravia, London, and spent much of his fortune in developing these properties. Although he was a Member of Parliament from the age of 22, and then a member of the House of Lords, his main interests were not in politics, but rather in his estates, in horse racing, and in country pursuits. He developed the stud at Eaton Hall and achieved success in racing his horses, winning the Derby on four occasions. Grosvenor also took an interest in a range of charities. At his death he was considered to be the richest man in Britain.

Henry Wriothesley, 1573-1624 (The 'Fair Youth' of Shakespeare's Sonnets??)

* Henry Wriothesley was the 3rd Earl of Southampton and probably The Bard's 'fair youth.' On the day of his birth his father wrote that he was born "this present morning at three of the clock."

In 1593 Shakespeare dedicated his narrative poem "Venus and Adonis" to Southampton, followed in 1594 by "The Rape of Lucrece." Although the dedication to "Venus and Adonis" is more restrained, the dedication to "The Rape of Lucrece" is couched in extravagant terms: 'The love I dedicate to your lordship is without end ... What I have done is yours; what I have to do is yours; being part in all I have, devoted yours'.

Nathan Drake, in Shakespeare and his Times, was the first to suggest that Southampton was not only the dedicatee of Shakespeare's two long narrative poems, but also the 'Fair Youth' of the Sonnets. The title page refers to the 'onlie begetter of these insuing sonnets Mr W.H.,' and it had earlier been inferred that the Sonnets were addressed to 'Mr. W.H.'. Drake, however, adopting Chalmers' suggestion that one meaning of 'beget' is 'bring forth', argued that Mr. W.H. was merely the procurer of the manuscript rather than the 'Fair Youth' addressed in the poems. Other adherents of the theory that Southampton was the addressee of the Sonnets have suggested that his initials, H. W. (Henry Wriothesley), were simply reversed by the publisher in order to conceal his identity. However Honan argues that although Southampton 'may be involved in Shakespeare's sonnets', 'there is no real likelihood that he traduced him by drawing his portrait as the fickle, treacherous Young Man of the sonnets, who is implicitly ‘lascivious’ (sonnet 95), ‘sensual’ to a ‘fault’ or to his ‘shame’ (sonnets 34, 35), and ridden with vices'.

Despite extensive archival research, no documents have been found concerning their relationship apart from the dedications to Shakespeare's two long narrative poems. Nicholas Rowe, on the authority of the actor Thomas Betterton (c.1635 – 28 April 1710), stated in his Life of Shakespeare that Southampton once gave Shakespeare £1000 to complete a purchase, but Honan terms this a myth.

HOROSCOPE NOTES

Was Henry Wriothesley the fickle, treacherous Young Man of the sonnets, who is implicitly ‘lascivious,' ‘sensual’ to a ‘fault’ or to his ‘shame,’ and ridden with vices'?? Does this description sound like a Sun-Mercury conjunction in Libra ruled by Venus in Scorpio all in the 2nd House??

There is no known birth record for Shakespeare except for his baptismal certificate dated 26 April 1564, indicating that he was probably born within a period of a few days prior to that date. So he was likely born with Pluto at 15° Pisces exactly on the cusp of Wriothesley's 7th House, indicating The Bard's deep attraction to the young earl.

Further, Shakespeare's likely Neptune-Venus conjunction in Gemini (poetic love writing) was conjunct the earl's Jupiter-MC (indicating speculation about his possible status as the 'Fair Youth' of the Sonnets).
