Lawrence "Titus" Oates, 1880–1912 (English Cavalry officer, Antarctic explorer)

* Captain Laurie "Titus" Oates had the last degree of self-sacrificing Pisces ― and final degree of the icy and deadly Scorpio decan ― on his Ascendant. Oates is famous for his honourable suicide in Antarctica in 1912: afflicted with gangrene and frostbite, and aware his ill health was compromising his three companions' chances of survival, he chose certain death, supposedly telling them, "I am just going outside and may be some time," before walking out into a blizzard amid −40°C/F temperatures.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Captain Lawrence Edward Grace ("Titus") Oates (17 March 1880 – 17 March 1912) was an English Cavalry officer with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, and later on in his life an Antarctic explorer, who died during the Terra Nova Expedition. Oates, afflicted with gangrene and frostbite, walked from his tent into a blizzard. His death is seen as an act of self-sacrifice when, aware his ill health was compromising his three companions' chances of survival, he chose certain death.

Julia Gillard (Australian former Prime Minister, newsmaker)

* Julia Gillard ― the Welsh-born first woman Prime Minister of Australia ― resigned her position on 27 June 2013 after losing leadership of the Labor Party in a spill the previous day. Gillard lacks fire in her chart but her Solar Arc moon moved into Leo soon after she became Prime Minister and at 2° 50" Leo on the day she stood down was closely quincunx natal Chiron (2° 46" Pisces), ruler of her Virgo MC.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Julia Eileen Gillard (born 29 September 1961) is an Australian politician who was the Prime Minister of Australia and Leader of the Labor Party from 2010 to 2013. She was the first woman to hold either position.

Gillard became the first female Deputy Prime Minister of Australia upon Labor's victory in the 2007 federal election, also serving as Minister for Education, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations and Minister for Social Inclusion. On 24 June 2010, after Rudd lost the support of his party and resigned, Gillard was elected unopposed as the Leader of the Labor Party, thus becoming the 27th Prime Minister of Australia. The subsequent 2010 federal election saw the first hung parliament since the 1940 federal election. Gillard was able to form a minority government with the support of a Green MP and three independent MPs. On 26 June 2013, after a leadership spill, Gillard lost the leadership of the Labor Party to Kevin Rudd. Her resignation as Prime Minister took effect the following day.

Soame Jenyns, 1704–1787 (English writer)

* Soame Jenyns ― who wrote against cruelty to animals like the "majestic bull" ― had angular Neptune ruling the Moon in sensitive Pisces, both in the 6th house of animals. And almighty Jupiter virtually unaspected in the sign of the bull.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

For the measure of literary repute which he enjoyed during his life Soame Jenyns (1 January 1704 – 18 December 1787) was indebted as much to his wealth and social standing as to his accomplishments and talents, though both were considerable. His poetical works, the Art of Dancing (1727) and Miscellanies (1770), contain many passages graceful and lively though occasionally verging on licence.

The first of his prose works was his Free Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Evil (1756). This essay was severely criticized on its appearance, especially by Samuel Johnson in the Literary Magazine. Johnson condemned the book as a slight and shallow attempt to solve one of the most difficult of moral problems. Jenyns, a gentle and amiable man in the main, was extremely irritated by his review. He put forth a second edition of his work, prefaced by a vindication, and tried to take vengeance on Johnson after his death by a sarcastic epitaph.

Don Cherry (American singer, sportsman)

* Don Cherry ― who earned a gold disc for his 1955 million-seller hit, "Band of Gold" ― has the golden Sun in the 5th, its natural house, closely quincunx and ruling Neptune in Leo. Also a former "pro" golfer, he has sporty Jupiter angular in Sagittarius.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Donald Ross Cherry (born January 11, 1924) is an American singer of traditional pop music, best known for his 1955 hit, "Band of Gold"; and a former amateur and professional golfer.

Cherry started as a big band singer in the orchestras of Jan Garber and Victor Young. In 1951 he recorded his first solo hits, "Thinking of You" and "Belle, Belle, My Liberty Belle". In 1955 came his biggest hit, "Band of Gold", which reached #5 on the Billboard chart. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. The track peaked at #6 in the UK Singles Chart. He had three more hits in 1956 ("Wild Cherry", "Ghost Town" and "Namely You"), all backed by orchestra leader Ray Conniff. He was also the voice of the Mr. Clean commercials during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Throughout his singing career, Cherry was also a top-ranked amateur golfer, and was in contention to win the 1960 U.S. Open before eventually finishing tied for ninth along with Ben Hogan, four strokes behind winner Arnold Palmer. In 1962, Cherry decided to turn professional and "Pro" became his nickname among fellow entertainers. His volcanic temper on the golf course (which, according to Cherry, "...made Tommy Bolt look like a choir boy!") was in startling contrast to his velvety-smooth singing voice and pleasant stage persona.

Cherry is a good friend of Willie Nelson and has collaborated on three albums with him, Augusta (1995), The Eyes of Texas (2002), and It's Magic (2007). Cherry was married four times, once to 1956 Miss America Sharon Ritchie, before wedding his present wife, Francine Bond Smith, in 1993. They live in Las Vegas, Nevada. His son, Stephen, was a casualty of the 9/11 attacks when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. Stephen left behind four sons.

Xiao Qian, 1910-1999 (Chinese writer, literary figure)

* For some Taurus-rising folk discovering the details of their birth can be a long and slow process. Xiao Qian ― one of China's finest writers ― did not find out his Western birthdate until he was almost 70. Apparently Venus ruling from the first degree of Pisces kept the information hidden. Xiao, who wrote over six million words in one series of books, had MC conjunct Mercury and the Sun, the latter ruling his 3rd House.

Wikipedia Biography

Xiao Qian (27 January 1910 – 11 February 1999) was a famous essayist, editor, journalist and translator from China. His life spanned the country before and after the establishment of the People's Republic of China.

As a journalist, he wrote a variety of publications. One of them is his book: xin bian wen shi biji cong shu. The series contains 50 books, in which 6,000,000 words were written. These series were written between the 1980s and early 1990s. The books collected a range of anecdotes and highlights from over 2000 celebrities and researchers. The series became highly reputable and widely accepted when it was released. As the last volume of the series was published in October 1994, another edition of the series were published in Hong Kong and Taiwan shortly after. The work was awarded the "Chinese Book Prize" as early as in 1993.

Written by Xiao between 1939 and 1946, the books, Symphony of Contradictions, Bloody September, and London under Silver Kites reflected his experience during the Second World War while he was living in the United Kingdom and Western Europe. They were mostly concerned with the day to day life of ordinary English citizens. They contained an analysis or speculation about political and military matters. While he was impressed by the determination of the English to defeat Germany, he also observed their negative cultural traits.

Ellen Glasgow, 1873-1945 (American novelist)

* Family testimony reveals that Ellen Glasgow was born "precisely at four o'clock in the morning." The first degree of Aries was rising, with Mars in Scorpio ruling from the 8th in a Fixed Grand Cross. My favourite Glasgow quote: “The only difference between a rut and a grave are the dimensions.”

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Ellen Anderson Gholson Glasgow (April 22, 1873 - November 21, 1945) was an American novelist who portrayed the changing world of the contemporary south.

As the United States women's suffrage movement was developing in the early 1900s, Glasgow marched in the English suffrage parades in the spring 1909. Later she spoke at the first suffrage meeting in Virginia. Glasgow felt that the movement came "at the wrong moment" for her, and her participation and interest waned. Glasgow did not at first make women’s roles her major theme, and she was slow to place heroines rather than heroes at the centers of her stories. Her later works, however, have heroines who display many of the attributes of women involved in the political movement.

In 1941 she published In This Our Life, which won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1942. In addition, it was quickly bought by Warner Brothers and adapted as a movie by the same name, released in 1942.

Her autobiography, The Woman Within, published after her death, details her progression as an author and the influences essential for her becoming an acclaimed Southern woman writer.

All through my childhood Mother celebrated my birthday on the 22nd of April. I still accept her authority, though I discovered a few years ago, when we consulted the old family Bible, which is now in the possession of my sister, Rebe Tutwiler, that Father had recorded the unhappy event as occurring on April 21st. As I came into the world precisely at four o'clock in the morning, by the testimony of all concerned, I suppose Father had considered it was still night, while Mother, a more sanguine spirit, who welcomed ten children with joy, had dreamed of the more confident morning. But we still made another discovery in the Bible adventure. It appeared, by the record in faded ink, that I was born, not in 1874, as I had always assumed, but in 1873. Many years ago, in filling in a first slip for Who's Who, my sister Cary must have, inadvertently, counted back from January, instead of April."

Maurice de Guérin, 1810–1839 (French poet)

* Maurice de Guérin ― recognized by literary critic, Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve, for the "strong and absorbing passion for nature" in his prose ― had passionate Pluto in poetic Pisces opposite nature-loving Venus in Virgo.

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Georges Maurice de Guérin du Cayla (4 August 1810 – 19 July 1839) was a French poet. Descended from a noble and rich family, he was born at the chateau of Le Cayla in Andillac, Tarn. He was educated for the church at a religious seminary at Toulouse, and then at the Collège Stanislas, Paris. In November 1838 he married a Creole lady of some fortune; but a few months afterwards he died of consumption. In the Revue des deux mondes for 15 May 1840, a memorial of Maurice de Guérin by George Sand was published, to which she added two fragments of his writings ― one a composition in prose entitled "The Centaur", and the other a short poem. His Reliquiae (2 vols., 1861), including the "Centaur", his journal, a number of his letters and several poems, was edited by G.S. Trébutien, and accompanied with a biographical and critical notice by Sainte-Beuve; a new edition, with the title Journal, lettres et poèmes, followed in 1862; and an English translation of it was published at New York in 1867. His sister Eugénie was a great influence on him and published some of his works after his death.

Though he was essentially a poet, his prose is more striking and original than his poetry. Its peculiar and unique charm arises from his strong and absorbing passion for nature, a passion whose intensity reached almost to adoration and worship, but in which the pagan was more prominent than the moral element. According to Sainte-Beuve, "no French poet or painter has rendered so well the feeling for nature ― the feeling not so much for details as for the ensemble and the divine universality, the feeling for the origin of things and the sovereign principle of life."

WIKIPEDIA BIOGRAPHY

Aimé Fernand David Césaire (26 June 1913 – 17 April 2008) was born in Basse-Pointe, Martinique. He traveled to Paris to attend the Lycée Louis-le-Grand on an educational scholarship. In Paris, Césaire created, with Léopold Sédar Senghor and Léon Damas, the literary review L'Étudiant Noir (The Black Student). In 1936, Césaire began work on his long poem Cahier d'un retour au pays natal, a vivid and powerful depiction of the ambiguities of Caribbean life and culture in the New World and this upon returning home to Martinique.

In 1947 he was finally able to publish his book-length poem Cahier d'un retour au pays natal (Notebook of a Return to the Native Land), which had first been published in the Parisian periodical Volontés in 1939. The book mixes poetry and prose to express his thoughts on the cultural identity of black Africans in a colonial setting. French surrealist poet André Breton contributed a laudatory introduction to this 1947 edition, saying that the "poem is nothing less than the greatest lyrical monument of our times."

He played college football for the University of Miami, where he was recognized as a consensus All-American and won multiple awards.

Sapp was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1995 NFL Draft as the 12th overall pick, and played professionally for the Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders of the NFL. He spent nine seasons with the Buccaneers where he earned seven trips to the Pro Bowl and a Super Bowl ring in 2003. He moved to the Raiders in 2004. His 96.5 career sacks (100 counting the playoffs) are the second-highest career total sacks for a defensive tackle and the 28th highest overall for a defensive lineman. His 77 sacks with the Buccaneers ranks as the most ever recorded in the team's history.

During Sapp's career, he was the source of some controversy because of his hard-hitting style of play and occasional verbal outbursts, both on the field and off. Some of these resulted in NFL fines, and he was once ejected from a game for unsportsmanlike conduct.

In his first year of eligibility, on February 2, 2013, Sapp was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Buccaneers will enter him into their Ring of Honor on November 11, 2013 and retire his #99 jersey. Sapp will become only the second Buccaneer to have his jersey retired, after Lee Roy Selmon.
