James Allan Hird (born 4 February 1973) is a former professional Australian rules footballer and the former coach of the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League.
Hird played as a midfielder and half forward, but was often given free rein by former Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy to play wherever he thought necessary. He was the joint winner of the 1996 Brownlow Medal with Brisbane Bears' midfielder Michael Voss. A half forward, Hird is often considered one of the greatest footballers of the modern era. He is a member of the AFL Hall of Fame and was listed by journalist Mike Sheahan as one of the top 50 players of all time
